S: Ruth Evelyn White: The Legacy of my Grandma and the Truths She Left Behind

FC: The Legacy of my Grandma: Truths She Left Behind | Ruth Evelyn White | 9/15/1923-10/24/2010 | 1986

God blessed me with 27 years with my Grandma, Ruth Evelyn White, and in those years I learned a lot from her. The following are the top twenty-seven lessons she taught me: -Michelle Bain | 1985 | 1995

 27. The days of the week are as follows: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and within those days, time should be specifically set aside for God and rest. | “There is absolutely no golfing (or shopping) on Sundays!" -Glenn and Ruth White | 1979 | 1984 | 1979 | 1988

 26. Prioritize properly. “She loved to bowl. When she was tired or not feeling well and debated going to a church event she asked herself if she would go bowling; if the answer was ‘yes’, she went to the event." -Nancy Bergsma | 1975

 25. “Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble." -1 Peter 3:8 “She was always so kind to salespeople and waiters and waitresses. She never treated them as someone waiting on her." -Nancy Bergsma | 1982 | 1994 | 1989

 24. Play games (especially Mexican Train Dominoes), ride Big Wheels, and jump in the pool! (Yes, it is possible to swim without getting your hair wet!) “She was always in the thick of the action, enjoying every interaction, living life to the fullest, and doing whatever it took to ensure that her team won every game." -Jana Micomonaco | 23. Let your life be a testament of God’s grace and Jesus’ life; actions speak louder than words. “You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” -2 Corinthians 3:2-3 | 1979

 22. Never twirl your hair, bite your nails, tug on your dress, or commit any other such social faux pas, ever! | 21. Don’t give in to peer pressure, even if saying no seems rude. Stick to what God taught you. “We never danced, even when the company threw dance parties in our honor. Yes, they would talk, but then I could talk. I was able to lead people to the Lord that way." -Ruth White | 2009 | 1998

 20. It’s the little things, like making seating charts or buying a bathing suit, that matter. People notice those continual acts of thoughtfulness and are changed by it. | 1989 | 1983 | 1982

 19. “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." -Proverbs 22:6 “Do you know why we have a good relationship and can talk about things now that you’re 16? Because I’ve always listened to you. You have a lot of good ideas now, but when you were 13 you talked a lot and didn’t have much to say; I endured those years because I knew if I stopped listening you would stop talking. I hoped someday you’d say something worth listening to." -Ruth White (as remembered by Chuck White) | “God gave you to me to train, and it’s my job to discipline you.” -Ruth White/Chuck White/ Jana Micomonaco | 1991 | 1986

 18. Be loyal to your family. (She was there for soccer games, gymnastics practice, basketball games, school concerts, awards nights, grandparents’ day, and plays in the basement!) “When my 6th grade teacher told Mom, in a conference, that I was too argumentative because I always insisted Chrysler cars were the best, Mom said, ‘He’s right!" -Chuck White | “She supported us in absolutely everything!” -Rob Bergsma | 1995 | 1995 | 1996 | 1999

 17. “Honor your Father and your Mother." -Exodus 20:12 “She gave me lots of advice when I was pregnant with you; I told her some of the things were old wives tales. She said, ‘When I tell you something, it is fact, not an old wives tale.'" -Nancy Bergsma | 15. When you wake up in the middle of the night, the best thing to do is to pray; God probably woke you up for a reason. | 16. Go ahead and tell a good story! Just don’t let “another good story get ruined by an eye witness” -White family tradition | 1987 | 1990 | 1997

“Grandma always lived what she talked about. She didn’t just tell us to give, serve, and tell the truth she gave, served, and told the truth!" -Rob Bergsma | 14. “What good is it if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." -James 2:14, 17 | 2010 | 2001 | 1994

“She was silly, she was witty, she was hilarious, and she was so fun. I loved to talk with her, loved to stay with her, loved to sit by her at family gatherings. She loved life, she lived it abundantly, and she made the lives of everyone, blessed enough to interact with her, more abundant as well." -Jana Micomonaco | 13. “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." -John 10:10 | 2001 | 1993 | 1994 | 1997 | 1994 | 1995

 12. Find and support the strengths and dreams of those around you. “I remember Grandma out at the school park across the street pitching wiffle balls to me and kicking soccer balls at me; there sure aren’t many 75-year-old women out there doing that!" -Tim Bergsma | 1991

 11. Be positive and fun to be around. “I NEVER dreaded hearing Mom's voice on the other end of the phone line. If she was calling, it was to share a funny story, see how things were going, or to invite me to do something fun." -Nancy White | "Tell me when I start doing funny things." -Ruth White; “I tell you already and you don't like it." -Nancy Bergsma | 1995 | 1990 | 1991

 10. There is always room for ice cream! “There is a separate compartment in your stomach." -Ruth White | 2002 | 2000

 9. Read and learn scripture continuously! “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." -Psalm 119:11 “She was always reading her Bible and marking notes in it, whether listening to sermons or having devotions. She faithfully memorized her monthly church Bible passages and encouraged us to do the same!" -Nancy Bergsma | 1989 | 1983 | 1973

 8. Tell the truth, even when it costs more. “All 17 of us had finished eating and were driving back to the cottages when someone noticed my milkshake never made it on the bill. Grandma turned the whole caravan around to return to the restaurant and pay for that one milkshake." -Tim Bergsma | 1991 | 1984

 1990 | 1986

 7. It is possible to become more like Jesus everyday. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." -Galatians 5:22-23 “The fruit of the Spirit- that’s it! That’s Grandma to a tee!" -Rob Bergsma “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ." -1 Corinthians 11:1 “Like Paul, Mom set an example and wanted us to follow." -Chuck White | 2009

 6. Put the needs of others first. “At that dining room table, she graciously served a meal, smiled, and was the quintessential hostess, all while suffering a nasty gall bladder attack (which we found out much later)! I think that sums up a lot about her- she was always more focused on others than herself." -Nancy White | 1987 | 1996 | 1999

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." -2 Corinthians 9: 6-7 | 5. Give your money away. | 1997 | 1995 | 1997

 4. Every human encounter is a chance to witness. “She would pray before every shopping trip and then come home with prayer requests from the ladies behind the Jacobsons' counter. Even in the end, when she was so sick, she would have moments of being her old self; I found her in the hospital room sitting with nurses telling them about Jesus!" -Linda Chapdelaine | 1993 | 1991 | 1978

 3. Marry your best friend, and then never stop talking and laughing together. “I have so much fun with Grandpa! Some couples stop talking over the years, but we always have more to talk and laugh about!" -Ruth White | 1986 | 2009

 2. “Love your neighbor as yourself." -Matthew 22:39 “I remember one time coming down the stairs and Mom was sitting at the dining room table with a hand drawn map of the neighborhood with boxes for the houses and lines for the roads. Some boxes she had marked with crosses; those were the homes of families she had led to the Lord. For the rest, she was strategizing, listening to the Lord, and waiting for Him to show her where He was working and who the next person was He wanted her to bless." -Chuck White | 1990 | 1982

 1. Let the world know where your heart is! | “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." -Matthew 22:37 | 2001 | 1994 | 2009
