3: John Steinbeck John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902 in a valley near the Pacific Coast.He attended Stanford University from 1919 to 1925, without getting a degree. His first novel, written in 1929, was written when he was working as laborer and journalist in New York City. Of all his books that he wrote during his lifetime, The Grapes of Wrath(1939) and Of Mice and Men(1937) were his two most famous books. The last years of Steinbeck's life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife. He later died in 1968, having won a Nobel Prize in 1962.
4: La Paz, Mexico 1880's-1900's In 1800, La Paz was mostly populated with farmers, or haciendos, that owned there own land and fed most of the population.
5: The top picture is an example of what the wealthy, or in The Pearl's case, would live in. the bottom picture is an example of what Kino and other people like him would live.
6: Juana Juana is the wife of Kino and the mother of Coyotito in the novel. She is mostly peaceful, until the point of danger comes, and is always loyal and obedient to Kino and his orders.

8: Kino Kino is the husband of Juana, the father of Coyotito, and the younger brother of Juan Tomas. For most of the novel, Kino's sole purpose was for his family and him to have financial peace. Little did he know that his want for wealth would lead to dangerous situations.
9: Kino is one of the main characters in the book. For the most point, he wanted wealth and power.
10: The Doctor The doctor is a wealthy Spaniard that only cares about money and himself. He is very ignorant to the family's needs because of their race and their lack of finances. He is an example of evil because he tricked Kino about Coyotito's health.
11: The doctor is a Spaniard doctor that is very wealthy and selfish.
12: Coyotito Coyotito is Kino's and Juana's only son. He is one of the main reasons why Kino wanted to find a pearl in th first because of his being stung by a scorpion in the beginning of the story.
13: Coyotito is the only son of Juana and Kino. He is faced with great danger in this story because he was stung by a scorpion.
14: Chapter 1 Summary The husband, Kino, woke in the dark to the sound of waves crashing. He heard the song of family in his ears while his wife, Juana, prepared breakfast. Soon after, when their baby Coyotito awoke, he was stung by a scorpion in his hanging box. Kino soon heard a song of evil. The family, with the rest of their community behind them, were soon on their way to see their doctor. They were instantly turned down because of their race and their lack of money. The doctor made an excuse saying that he was called to a serious case.
15: Chapter 2 Summary The beginning of this chapter is describing how the town looked. Kino and Juana were coming down to the beach in Kino's canoe and went looking for a pearl to help pay for the doctor. While Kino was underwater searching, Juana was in the canoe with Coyotito praying to find a pearl. Kino soon came across a large oyster tha was later found to be the maker of the pearl. In this chapter, Kino has found the pearl of the world.
16: Chapter 3 Summary Word of Kino finding the pearl traveled through the town fast. The doctor finally became aware that he had to treat the child. The pearl buyers were ready for Kino to sell the pearl and everyone in the community suddenly became an enemy. Kino, now a rich man, is starting to make bright plans for his family's future. He had a dream that is people will finally be able to understand what is going on in the world because Coyotito would learn how to read. When the doctor came to treat Coyotito, he made the baby sick without Kino knowing about it. Kino was attacked later that night and Juana was warning him because she knew that the pearl was evil and that it would bring danger to their family.
17: Chapter 4 Summary The next morning, the family and the rest of the community dressed in their best clothes to go see the pearl buyers. When they all got there, the pearl buyer that they went to said that the pearl had no value. Kino became upset and he said that he would go and get his money from the capital.
18: Chapter 5 Summary Juan tried to get rid of the pearl on the beach in the beginning of this chapter. While doing that, Kino found her and beat her up on the beach. Kino was soon attacked and had to kill a man. They went into hiding in his brother's house. In the midst of all of this, Kino's house burned down and everyone else thought that they were dead. Juan Tomas told them to flee to the north.
19: Chapter 6 Summary Kino and Juana were being chased and hunted. Coyotito was mistaken for an animal and was shot and soon killed. Kino also killed another man in this chapter.
20: Moral The moral of this story is to not let money, power, or materialistic things get in the way of what is important in your life.
