S: The Worst Birthday Ever

FC: The Worst Birthday Ever | By; Katie Writz

Two years ago, on my mom's birthday, we were all expecting a wonderful day. Unfortunately for us, the night was about to get a lot longer than anticipated.

We started out with a wonderful morning, including games galore and fantastic food. We wanted the rest of the day to continue just the way it was going. Little did we know that it was going to end up MUCH differently...

Once we were through with our incredible morning, we were ready to head over to our neighborhood's annual chili fest at Rotary Park. When we arrived, my parents went over to talk with the adults, while my sister and I joined the kids in playing games such as "tag" and "man on rocks". We were all running around, having a great time, when all of a sudden there was a giant "THUD!"

That was the sound of my body smacking against the gravel road. BLACKOUT! My mind went completely blank. I was out for the counting. Fortunately for me, no one had seen my fall. So, I very quickly scooped myself up and ran to hide behind a huge evergreen tree. I was so embarrassed. As I looked down, all I could see were streams of red gushing down my leg. Oh Great! I thought. This was definitely NOT what I had planned for our amazing day.

Lucky for me, my sister walked by one minute later. I told her to go over and get my mom right away. Unsure of what was going on, she hesitantly went over to get my mom. Once my mom saw me, all she could do was gasp at the sight. She had my neighbor, who was a doctor, check my knee out, without delay. He recommended that we go to the hospital immediately because it looked like a very deep cut and was going to need stitches. Perfect! Just Perfect! I sarcastically thought to myself. Just in time for the basketball season!

We sped over to St. Mary's Hospital at once. Turns out, he was right. After a long and tiring, two hour wait, the doctor finally got me in to see him. He said that I was going to need five stitches in my right knee. As he very carefully stitched me up, I tried my very hardest to be brave and work through the pain of the pounding drumming inside of me. Once he was finished, he then said that we were good to go and could be on our way. So much for our night of fun and games. I thought, annoyed and upset with myself.

Though it was not a very funny situation at the time, my family now looks back on it and giggles. We now joke around whenever I go near gravel paths. "Don't Slip, Katie!" jokes my dad.

What we used to think was an all bad day, really actually brought my family closer together. Plus, I now know that I should watch where I am going a little better.
