5: This piece is the most famous artwork that Wood created. It recieved its name from the the house in the background- house is American but the window is of Gothic style. Posing as a farmer and his daughter are Woods' sister and the family dentist.

7: Wood spent two summers at the School of Art and Handicraft in Minneapolis and three years of night classes at the Art Institute in Chicago.

8: Wood would get burnt sticks from the stove and use those as his drawing tools. | Grant Wood showed an interest in art at a young age. | Growing up on a farm inspired Woods' work. | His father died when Wood was 10 years old.

9: Fathers death caused family to move to the city. | Made scenery for school plays and drawings for the newspaper. | Graduated high school in 1910.

13: Grant Wood liked painting what he knew. He painted the farmland where he grew up; he also painted the people he knew best. In the picture to the left he painted his mother, and in the background is the farmland that was so familiar to him.

15: Midnight Ride of Paul Revere | Wood also liked to paint pictures of American legends. | The picture to the left is what Wood envisioned as a child of what Paul Reveres' ride looked like.

17: Stone City, Iowa | Grant Wood started a "art colony"which is an art school in Stone City, Iowa.

19: Wood went to Europe twice to study the artwork there. Once taking a leave from his job as a high school art teacher. European art played a role in helping Wood develop his mature art style.

21: Wood made one of the largest stained glass windows ever. Located at the Veterans Memorial Building in Ceder Rapids, Iowa. The glass was 24x20 feet. It was completed in two years.
