1: Imagine yourself. It’s the first day of spring. You’re in your red convertible, driving down a country road. The wind whipping through your hair, the smell of fresh cut grass surrounds you. Flowers are in bloom everywhere and the sky is a beautiful blue. Your favorite song comes on the radio and you are singing at the top of your lungs. Nothing could be better. You round the next curve and on the other side BAM. total darkness. Suddenly you cannot see. Everything is black. The air is so thick, it’s hard to breathe. You can’t find your way. How do you get out of this darkness? This is how we felt the day our eight year old son and brother Thomas was killed in a car accident. Life seemed to stop. The world moved forward without us. Only after we learned to draw closer to the Lord, were we able to begin walking through that deep dark valley we had fallen into. Slowly at first, then gaining speed, until we could feel the warmth of the light from the end of the valley pulling us out. Today after having walked that valley, our wish is to bring honor to God by serving others.
2: Wrapped in HIS Warmth was created to honor the memory of our son and brother Thomas Richard Marx. The mission of Wrapped in HIS Warmth is to show the love of Christ to those in poverty and homelessness by providing hats, scarves and gloves for cold winter days.

16: Rick and Koreen Marx of Matthews started a nonprofit in honor of their son,Thomas. The couple collects hats, scarves and gloves for needy area children. In 2001, Rick and Koreen Marx of Matthews found themselves in a cold, dark valley. Losing their 8-year-old son, Thomas, in a car accident April 4, 2001, the Marx’s world stopped turning. Determined to climb out of their sorrow, they turned to their Christian faith, and in 2008, the Marx’s decided to honor Thomas by creating the nonprofit Wrapped in His Warmth. Wrapped in His Warmth is dedicated to giving children, from infants to 18 years old, new hats, scarves, gloves and mittens free-of-charge. The Marx’s and their daughter, Elizabeth, 20, founded the organization to keep Thomas’ memory alive. Koreen Marx works as a social services assistant for the Matthews Help Center, which is currently accepting donations of hats, scarves and gloves for Wrapped in His Warmth. The warm clothing will go to needy children through the center’s Christmas “adopt a family” program. The nonprofit also has partnered with Urban Ministries and will give more than 350 items to the homeless during their Christmas Day dinner. “After (Thomas) died, we went through a lot,” Koreen Marx said. “Now that we have walked our valley, we feel like we should give glory to God and serve others, and this is a way to do both.” Wrapped in His Warmth managed with only donations from family and friends the first year, but it has grown quickly. The nonprofit gave away 3,000 pieces in 2009 and expects to hand out 10,000-hat-scarf-and-glove sets this year. “Thomas was the most giving one out of all of us before, and so we just wanted to give back in his honor,” Koreen Marx said. Running Wrapped in His Warmth out of Thomas’ bedroom, the time she spends pairing donated scarves, hats and gloves also provides time to remember Thomas. “When we are packing things we are in (Thomas’) room, and I can feel a connection” with him, Marx said. Wrapped in His Warmth gives most of its items away at the annual Christmas Village Toy Store. Located at 2307 Wilkinson Blvd. and at Lake Forest Church, 8519 Gilead Road in Huntersville, the Christmas Village Store allows families to purchase new toys at a discounted rate. Last year, while handing out the sets, Koreen Marx remembers meeting a young boy accompanied by a teacher from his school to pick out toys for Christmas. After his shopping was complete, the boy approached Wrapped in His Warmth volunteers and instead of picking out a set for himself, he had another request. “He wanted to get one for his teacher,” Marx said. The Marx family is excited to see where the organization goes in the future and enjoys knowing its recipients can stay warm, even on the coldest of days. “We just wanted to give back in (Thomas’) honor,” Marx said. Wrapped in His Warmth “just happened. It is a God thing.”
