FC: welcome to corpus christi, texas | the nasty nine years

1: FORWARD | This book is a compilation of photographs and text "as it actually happened" and is meant to depict the activities of a particular group of individuals, both civilian and military, who lived in or around Corpus Christi, Texas, during the years of 1964 through 1968. At the core of this unique society was a group known as the "Nasty Nine". The "Nasty Nine" was comprised of a loosely knit group of nine individuals from vastly differing parts of the country. How they found and befriended each other was facilitated in large part by being members of the United States Navy and stationed at the US Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas, at the same time. All nine members of this group were assigned to either Training Squadron 29 (VT29), Training Squadron 31 (VT31) or the NAS Aircraft Maintenance Depot (AMD). Of merit is that these nine individuals met through a network of friends meeting friends of friends and occurred some 40+ years before the advent of Facebook. The nine individuals noted above proudly served the United States Navy and their Country by being hands-on members of a support organization whose primary focus was the maintenance of aircraft used in the training of future Naval Aviators and Naval Flight Officers. Their days were spent in support of aircraft mechanical systems, electrical systems, avionics systems or propulsion systems, while their nights were spent in an effort to expand their working knowledge of healthy, attractive and well-developed young ladies living in Nueces County, Texas. In their endeavors to expand the working knowledge noted above, covert night operations would often employ a Recon-Interaction methodology. This system was enacted by a number of individuals who worked as a team to lure shapely young ladies into spirited conversation and subsequent alcohol enhanced merriment. Surprisingly, the success of this method was often a function of the group's mean level of sophistication. The more sophisticated members of the group being offset by the more socially crude members of the group often made a pleasant and enticing lure for any gathering of unsuspecting young females. Whichever type of gentleman the ladies favored that particular evening would be available in at least one member of the group. The relationships forged during those years have endured to this day. To our collective knowledge, at this writing, only two members of the "Nasty Nine" are no longer with us. Mr. Jack Stowers died in 2006 in his native Oklahoma and Mr. Leonard "Johnny" Johnson died in Colorado circa 2012. Their memory lives on in our hearts and on these pages, RIP Jack and Johnny...we'll all meet again someday. Editor's Note: The photographic coverage of the events shown in this book is spotty and erratically timed, at best. These are pictures taken by a number of individuals and are not fully inclusive of the period. Many of the best photographs taken have been either lost or destroyed in the years since then. What is included represents the best of what is available.
