Gover & Joseph Gover purchased the Shokan house and acres of land surrounding it. | The tradition of Buckley Family Weekend was born. | The Shokan house was purchased by the original "Circas": Ray & Maureen Buckley, Jim & Anita Buckley, Bob & Arden Buckley, Gladys & Dick Mullin, and Wally & Maddy Schilo. | The House Guest Book was created for family and friends to sign.
3: 1984 | The House received an upgrade - a new deck and porch! | 2010 | 2009 | The House got a New Bathroom during the fall of 2009. | The "Raise the Roof" project executed to repair the roof of the House. | 2013 | 1996 | The year of "The Flood" at Family Weekend. | 2011 | Hurricane Irene visited West Shokan, causing downed trees, flooding, and road closures. While we lost some trees, the house endured the storm; some say that our Family's positive energy is what held up the rafters! | This year, the house has been in our family for 60 years!
4: Buckley Family Weekend | 1971 | Family Weekend at Shokan has been the cornerstone of the ages in our family. While our family has grown larger and has moved to all corners of the country, we have remained close-knit, in large part due to Buckley Family Weekend and the Shokan Estate. We are blessed to have a family reunion that has endured over 40 years and is cherished by all. | Buckley Family Weekend began in 1971 at the suggestion of Ray Buckley, III. The event became an annual gathering that was held each September to bring together the Family for a weekend of fun, food, and games. | 1971

6: Flag Raising Ceremony | the | the | The Flag Raising Ceremony has been an opening tradition of Family Weekend since its inception in 1971. Every year, we sing “God Bless America” as the children present the family with the American Flag. Following the flag-raising, the kids lead the teams in morning exercises to prepare for the weekend’s strenuous competitions!

12: STARS vs. STRIPES | The Stars and the Stripes Teams were formed in 1978. Prior to the teams being formed, the weekend’s competitions were among the families. When the Stars and Stripes began, the team Captains were Bob Buckley and Jim Buckley, respectively. Throughout the decades, the captainships have been held by Jim Buckley Jr. & Rich Buckley for the Stripes, and Dan Nolan for the Stars, with our current Captains being Craig Schilo (Stripes) and Ryan Nolan (Stars).

16: SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE | Saturday evening entertainment at Buckley Family Weekend has varied over the years, but for many years included "Saturday Night Live" - an evening of skits, jokes, and lots of laughter!
17: SNYDER'S TAVERN | The local "watering hole." During several Family Weekends there was a “cousins night” at Snyder’s! Built in 1910, the tavern has been operated for three generations of the Snyder family and has one of the oldest liquor licenses in the NY State. | CARDS | Playing Blackjack has been a tradition at Family Weekend for many years. Whether the game is played in the kitchen, on the porch, or even in the shed, it's a game for all generations - and a way to teach the kids their math skills!

20: It was in 1990 that we began holding Family Weekend surrounding the 4th of July Holiday. | THE 1990s
22: LET THE GAMES BEGIN! | The tradition of competition has been a part of Family Weekend since the beginning. Over the years, some of the games have changed, and some have remained the same. Volleyball, the Egg Toss, Ping Pong, and Kickball have traversed the decades, while Water Pong, Flip Cup, Connect Four, the Duck Race, and the Photo Contest are traditions that we’ve begun in more recent years.

30: KIDS GAMES!
31: The Kids’ Games are for – you guessed it – the Kids! Anyone 12 years old and younger can participate in the Kids Games for a chance to win the coveted MVP Award and help their team win the Family Cup. The games inevitably involve excitement, fun, crying, cheering, encouragement, competition and many photo opportunities.

40: THE TIRE SWING
41: The tire swing has been an institution of the Shokan house for decades. Generations of children have wonderful memories of swinging, spinning, and climbing on the tire swing.
42: Awards Ceremony
43: The Family Cup trophy dates back to the very beginning of Buckley Family Weekend. It is awarded to the winning team of each year’s competitions during the Awards Ceremony at the close of Family Weekend. The winning team and the final scores are engraved on the trophy each year. In 2000, a second tier was added to the trophy because we ran out of space to engrave!
44: The MVP Award | The MVP Award is a coveted prize given to the Winner of the Kids Games each year. The first MVP was give to Danny Buckley in 1978, and has been a treasured honor awarded every year since, to dozens of recipients.
