S: Thanksgiving 2010

BC: "Happy Thanksgiving to all and to all a goodnight!"

'Twas two days before Thanksgiving and in the quiet snow hush, Jon sits at the table eating his mush. | November 2010

The barn swallows flew south, the finches don't chatter The grapes have stopped growing but what does it matter? Flower garden is sleeping the apples are pressed.

Black walnut is stately, it's leaves laid to rest.

The chickens are snoozing all snuggled and round. Solar panels are quiet, the snow shuts them down.

The seed field is barren, the sky is all gray, But the farm house is cozy and warm on this day.

Willow yurt's empty and so is the swing, Just waiting for boys and the joy they will bring.

The creek is at flood stage, way over its edges. Water is creeping up trees, around sedges.

We like beavers. | In the quiet, unnoticed come neighbors quite bold, Chewing and looking for wood to haul home. Gathering pieces, busy as bees,

Keeps man and beast bustling to be warm in the freeze.

In only two days the snow's gone on the drive then cars full of visitors start to arrive. First one, then another soon everyone's here. The farm house is full and the guests full of cheer. The kettles are whistling, the mixer is spinning the cooks are in action, it's just the beginning.

Grandma and daughters & husbands you see...

 are preparing their dishes....

 ...for glad company.

The name cards, the plates, the glasses are clinking. The table is ready...

... and the candles are twinkling!

There's hustle and bustle, the oven timer dings. The turkey is ready and the dinner bell rings. The hungry ones gather and squeeze 'round the table.

The prayer is sung. The food is passed. Now eat while you're able.

The conversation dangles, glasses raise for a toast and everyone drinks to the hostess and host.

Soon all are "too stuffed," but "what about pie?" "Well, okay... but a small one," heaving one heavy sigh.

The eating is over and projects glow bright. The giggles and squealing last well into the night. And everyone said as they drove out of sight,
