FC: Happy Holidays

Dec 19th Five hours late and lighter in luggage, Kirsten finally joins Liz in Barcelona!

Dec 19th Our first paella of the trip was delicious and on the boardwalk of Barceloneta. We crowned a king crawdad of the mussels!

Dec 20th La boqueria on Las Ramblas.

 Las Ramblas by night.

Dec 20th Parc Guell and Casa Guadi entrance.

z | Of course, we didn't start at the beginning but right at the top! And to get there we had to take some outdoor escalators. Now if the folks at Grouse would follow suit....

 z | A beautiful view.

All I need for Christmas is you...

Dec 21st After a leisurely morning spent wandering Maria del Mar Cathedral and the Picasso Museum in the Barri Gothic, we went to the Fira de Santa Lucia Christmas market. Nearby in Placa Jaume, we found the first of many large nativity scenes.

 We found camels in Barcelona!

Dec 21st We ended our day with another paella -- this time at a restaurant on Las Ramblas with some sangria and salumi. Barcelona and the Catalan region is very well known for their ham and sausages. We felt it necessary to sample as much as possible! (Particularly since it isn't available in Kuwait.) We picked up some mistletoe at the Fira de Santa Lucia because it was so pretty. Plenty of seasonal kisses! Coming home we came across a Catalan Christmas tradition -- the caganer.

 Dec 22nd Sacrada Familia

Our third paella and a mere block away from the apartment. Our most expensive one as well because of confusion over minimum orders. Oh well, it was tasty!

After a mad dash through pouring rain and a 4 hour bus ride, we arrived in Zaragoza. We visited the Basilica and Catedral del Pilar and later that night through the almost large as life nativity scene. We even strolled through the local boqueria and a twilight view of the Palacia de la Aljafira.

In Spain, Santa traditionally arrives by rope ladder as chimneys are not so common.

Dec 23rd Zaragoza's Cesar Augustus has a new understudy and she's got a very fetching scarf!

Dec 23rd Basilica del Pilar, Zaragoza

Although we intended to go out dancing, our nap turned into a full on snoozefest. The next morning we returned to Barcelona. We enjoyed a cafe con leche at the bus depot with some very polite napkins.

Dec 24th Arriving back at Estacio del Nord, we spent some time in the lovely park just outside. We got a gorgeous day which was a far cry from the rain we'd endured when we left Barcelona.

 z

 Heading to Mont Juic!

View of Barceloneta from the gondola to the top of Mont Juic. | You are here.

 z | Poble Espanyol

 Christmas dinner at Restaurant Peru.

 Dec 26th Arc de Triomf

z | We leave the Arc de Triomf behind us and enter the Parc Ciutdella.

 z

Dec 27th Palau de la Musica

Hmmm, let's see if this is a magic key -- open sesame!

Kirsten and Liz are goofs, si o si?

Combo plate of seafood at La Boqueria. We finished everything and it was delicious.

 La Pedrera

 La Pedrera

 Casa Botllo

Barcelona memory round up! Casual strolls around Dreta/Esquerra, odd Christmas decor and adventures on the Metro.

z | Santa works his magic to fit into Kirsten's carry-on!
