12: Summer Session | Connections | The summer session makes 'the Devon life' seem carefree and enjoyable. This is when the boys enjoy playing games and getting into mischief, but not getting in trouble. | Winter Session | When the boys go to work on the railroad, the snow is first described. This is when the boys are also contemplating joining the war. The cold, bitter snow brings out the darkness of war.
13: Roaring 20's The 1920's played a main role in the ways of the 1930's. In the novel, the boys experience so much freedom at school to act how they please. They decide to skip school, break rules, and take adventures. Because of the fact the characters grew up in the 20's, they didn't know any other way to act in the 30's.
