2: is for August | We used August because she became one of the many main characters. She also helped Lily figure out who her mother was. "" | "We live for honey." -August
3: is for Bees | Bees become a very important factor in this book, especially to the Boatwright family. August would use the bees honey to help treat almost anything. | "At night I would lie in bed and watch the show, how the bees would squeeze through the cracks of my bedroom wall, and flew circles around the room making a zzzz noise." - Lily
4: is for Civil Rights | The Civil Rights had a big impact on this book. An example is when Rosaline and Zach got arrested for something a white person wouldn't have been.
5: is for Deborah | Deborah was Lily's mother. She died very early on in the book. When Lily asked May if she knew who Deborah was. | ''My mother's name was Deborah. I thought that was the prettiest name I'd ever heard, even though T. Ray refused to speak it.'' -Lily
6: is for Escaping Sylvan | Escaping Sylvan was a very important factor, because if they didn't run away they wouldn't have meet the Boatwright family. Also, Lily wouldn't have found out anything else about her mother.
7: is for Frost | This poem is one of the things that Lily had in common with her mom. They both had to read the poem for school. | "Closing my eyes I saw my mother perched beside August on a tree limb going through each line of "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," which i myself had had to learn for English," said Lily
8: is for Gloves | The gloves were one of the few things Lily's mother left behind. | "Putting on her gloves I noticed how tight it felt all of the sudden. By the time i was 16 it would feel like baby gloves,"said Lily.
9: is for honey | Honey was used a lot in this book. August has to make a living off of her honey. | Lily learns the benefit of adding honey to her diet and her beauty regimen. Her skinny limbs begin to plump, and her hair begins to soften. The doses of honey seem to do wonders for her body.
10: is for Irrationality of racism | When Rosaleen goes to jail. And when she gets beaten in jail. | "Two of the policemen held be by the arm while the other one hit me with the flashlight,"said Rosaleen
11: is for June | June was a unique character because her personality varied all through out the story. Also in the beginning, she has different attitudes towards different characters. | "But she's white August," said June | June is in love with Neil but refuses to accept his marriage proposal for most of the novel.
12: is for Killing Bugs | May taught Lily's mom to lead bugs out of the house instead of killing them; which intern helps LIly discover that her mother stayed at the Boatwright house. | Instead of actually killing the bugs, May uses graham crackers the lead the bugs outside to prevent them from being killed.
13: is for Lily | LIly is the main character in the story. She also has been through many changes and experiences in her life but learns how to handle them through out this book. | “‘You [T-Ray] don’t scare me,’ I repeated, louder this time. A brazen feeling had broken loose in me, a daring something that had been locked up in my chest”
14: is for May | "A worker bee weighs more than a flower pedal, but she can fly with a load heavier than her. But she only lives for five weeks. Sometimes not feeling is the only way you can survive." | During the story, May is depressed due to her twin sister's death when she was younger. Then towards the end, she commits suicide because she found out that Zach was in jail.
15: is for Neil | Neil: Hi. June Boatwright: Hi. Neil: Did you call me here to talk? I am a little busy... June Boatwright: You ain't the only one who's busy, Neil. Neil: So I'm just supposed to stand here and watch how busy you are... June Boatwright: No! *Both turn away with a sigh* | In this story, Neil had a thing for June, but June wouldn't date him because of a failed relationship that had happened in the past; but in the end of the book, June trusted him, and they got married.
16: is for Our Lady of Chains | August explains that the sisters have taken the Catholicism of their mother and added their own twist. August assures Lily that if she asks for Mary’s help, she will provide it. She tells Lily a story about a nun who received the help of Mary. Lily asks Mary for assurance that she will never have to return home and that the police will not take her and Rosaleen. | Our Lady of Chains was inspirational to the women because of the background story. It is very important to everyone.
17: is for Photo | Lily's photo of her mom is something she cherishes and holds very dearly. Photos in the story are also essential because without the photo of the Black Mary she never would have found the Boatwright to begin with. | I looked down at the picture, then closed my eyes. I figured May must've made it to heaven and explained to my mother about the sign I wanted. -Lily pg 276
18: is for QUEEN BEE | The Queen Bee is essential to the book. In some chapters of the book, events in the story would someone relate to the of bees. | The queen, for her part, is the unifying force of the community; if she is removed from the hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence. After a few hours, or even less, they show unmistakable signs of queenlessness. -Man and Insects
19: is for Rosaleen | Rosaleen is essential to Lily staying alive. Even though they may argue sometimes Rosaleen is like a second mother to Lily and was always there to help her. | "Look at you, child. Look what he'd done to you," she cried.
20: is for Sue Monk Kidd | Sue is a great author. This book is very inspirational and emotional. It contains real life situations and how you can overcome no matter what your skin color is.
21: is for T.Ray | T.Ray is the reason LIly ran away. So T.Ray actually gave Lily a chance to find more about her mother. He was not a good father, but he was generous to Lily when he didn't protest when August asked if Lily could stay. | "I expect this out of boys, Lily - you can't blame them - but I expect more out of you. You act no better than a slut." -T.Ray
22: is for United | The Boatwright sisters were united not only as friends but as well as family which is how it should be, but it took Lily a little while to bond with all of them. | "A blur passed before me. Am moving wave of color. I am not one of you, I thought"--Pg. 111
23: is for Virgin Mary | "I pulled the wooden picture of black Mary from my pocket and handed it to her."It belonged to my mother," I said"--Pg. 243 | Lily was trying to find out why her mom had a picture of a black virgin Mary on a plank of wood.
24: Is for Wall | I | We use wall because May uses her wailing wall so she can feel better when she hears bad news. | "I'm going to the wall", said May.This was the last time they saw her alive.
25: is for eXtreme pink house | We chose the pink house because it was where August and the sisters lived ,and where Lily and Rosaleen stayed. It was also where most of the book had taken place. | "...beside the pink house,a house so pink it remained a scorched shock on the back of my eyelids after I looked away." - said in pg. 67
26: is for Yelling | T-Ray was yelling at Lily almost all the time. T-Ray was being mean by yelling at Lily so much that she ran away. | "I know one thing,and that's I'm gonna find you,Lily,and when I do,I'm gonna tear your behind to pieces--," said T-Ray.
27: is for Zach | Zach was a character in the book throughout the whole story. He liked Lily, and Lily ,liked him (which was awkward back then.) | "It was all my fault.If I'd turned into the person who threw the bottle, I wouldn't have gotten arrested and none of this would happen," said Zach.
