FC: Fallen Angels and the Monomyth By Ben Culbreath

The Call | For Richie Perry his journey began when his family was in need. Although he was an intelligent person his single mother could not afford to send him to college. She barely found enough money to support herself and her son Kenny (Myers 14). These factors were the cause for Richie thinking about the military. I think he also wanted to set a good example for Kenny, and to help him eventually get out of the slums of Harlem.

The Refusal of Call | Although it was obvious that Richie's best option was to join the military, he was still unsure in him self and a little scared to go. Even when he got there he thought that he would never have to shoot a gun, that the war was almost over (Myers 5). He also hoped to get sent home after injuring his knee playing basketball (Myers 5). Unfortunately the paperwork for his discharge got lost somewhere so he had to stay. He came so close to not going to Vietnam, but in the end he had to go, and man the war was definitely not over.

Crossing the Threshold | The first step into Richie starting his journey is when he takes his first night patrol with his squad. The night goes smooth for the entire night... until the end of the patrol as they reenter camp. This was right about when he started settling down and not being so scared. As they walked back Jenkins stepped on a land mine and died instantly, scaring the entire patrol even more. This was his first major step into his heroic journey, thus "crossing the threshold".

Supernatural Aid | Ever since the beginning Richie has had friends who helped him through all his trials. I think his best friend on his journey through the military was Peewee. He was there from the beginning to the end, and had seen the same things that Richie had. Even his mother wrote to Richie through Peewee sometimes. Peewee always had Richie's back to the end.

Road of Trials | The first trial after the threshold is when Richie and his squad open fire on one of it's own platoons realized how confusing war could be (Myers 103). Then he gets ambushed at a local village (Myers 124). At that ambush Carrol gets hit. The last major trial is when he kills a man to save his life (Myers 181).

The Goddess | The goddess in Fallen Angels was Judy Duncan. She was almost the only girl mentioned in the entire book. It appears that Richie likes her in the beginning and is embarrassed that his comrades see him with her (Myers 6-7). She also assures him that the war wont be that bad and that he will come out alright. Unfortunately she dies when her hospital is bombed.

Apotheosis | Richie's apotheosis occurs at the very end of the book when he sees Monaco laying injured as bait to lure in an American chopper. Normally he wouldn't have even noticed that it was a trap and even if he did he probably would've ran away. But by the end of the journey he had changed so much that he spotted the trap and decided to act. He and Peewee opened fire on the "Vietcong's" to warn the chopper (Myers 296). Together they saved many lives.

Master of Two Worlds | Richie fully masters both worlds when he realized what war is all about. He told Kenny that "when the killing started, there was no right or wrong except in the way you did your job, except in the way that you were part of the killing". He understood that war wasn't all about heroes and bad guys. He knows that the world wont be the same at all when he returns home.
