FC: A Tragic Death

My Great Uncle Al's death upset me very much. He was funny, caring, and kind to everyone. I learned many lessons from my great uncle. | A picture of my great uncle and my family

My great uncle enlisted in the US Army during World War II and he was a Staff Sergeant in the Service Company 84th Engineers. He served in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. After the war, he worked as a heavy equipment operator. The most notable project he worked on was the Alaskan Pipeline. Two of his favorite hobbies were hunting and fishing.

My family loved to go visit my great uncle and be in his garden. One of our favorite activities to do with him was to play checkers, even though he always won. | Where my great uncle lived. Sparta is about four hours away | He grew all kinds of fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, corn, and rhubarb.

My family and I loved to play with his coon dog Cindy. Also, whenever we visited my great uncle he always gave us hot dogs for lunch and dinner, and then he gave us a big bowl of ice cream. | Plenty of close family friends showed up to the service | The hot dogs we had were the biggest ones you have ever seen | He filled the bowls to the very top with giant scoops of ice cream

One of my saddest memories is attending his memorial service. I could barely keep from crying when I was listening to people talk about my Uncle Al. | Plenty of close family friends came to the service

My great uncle's funeral occurred later that year. Some retired veterans showed up to the funeral because he was in the army during World War II, so he received a military burial. When he was buried, they shot their rifles into the air. Everyone at the funeral was very sad and looked like they were about to cry. | I still become sad when I think about my great uncle. There will always be a place in my heart for him and I hope that I am able to visit his grave several more times in the future.
