FC: The Great Depression | Becca and Emily

The Great Depression By:Becca and Emily

 Waiting in line.!

The Great Depression began in 1929 and went on until 1939. It was the worst time. Many people had lost their jobs and began to go poor. Over 15 million people lost their jobs. No one was making money. 1933 was the worst year because many people could not afford anything. These people would stand outside in bread lines. These bread lines would begin to form around 4 Am.! Sometimes so many people would stand in these lines that they would run out of bread. Over all the Great Depression was a period in the United States History when business was bad and many people were out of work.

Life during the Great Depression was very difficult. It was mostly hard for farmers, but it wisent much better in the cites. In the cities over 14 million people lived in UN clean places plus without heat. Parents watched their children grow thinner and thinner, they watched them freeze because they didn’t have coats or shoes. By 1933 million or families were out of work. It was the father’s job to provide food and shelter. When the father could not provide for his family he would feel ashamed and most of the men left their families and became a group called a generation of wanderers. (Hobos)

same of the hardships in the great depression was not being able to repay doubts. by not being able to pay this is how most people lost their homes. The people who lost their homes depended on the Red Cross. Most teenagers were able to find jobs when their parents could not. To add teenagers took on the responsibility's of their parents. sometimes even the parent went to the teenager for comfort. The one with the job had to care for everyone. some parents even had their child stand with a sign asking to give their dad a job. Thats how desperate people were to get jobs.

After the crash, Hoover ordered federal departments to speed up construction projects, cut $160 million in taxes, and doubled the amount spent on public works. By 1933, one-fourth of the nation's workers were unemployed. In addition to the high unemployment, the American economy experienced slow economic growth and financial instability. Hoover was criticized for his refusal to authorize large-scale relief programs that might have alleviated the nation's suffering and hunger, his unwillingness to use a significant amount of federal dollars to stimulate the nation's economy, and his failure to recognize the all-encompassing nature of the Great Depression.

 Families

Families now are different and the same as the families in the time of To kill a Mockingbird. To kill a Mockingbird takes place during the 1930's. In the novel they had to represent their family very well. Everything they did showed how the family was. For example; Scout didn't want to go to school because the teacher would always tell her not to read at home. Since the Ewells went to school only on the first day, she wanted to do the same. Today kids do whatever not caring what people think about their family.

In To kill a mockingbird the Ewells were known as white trash. People didn't like the Ewells, they were the poorest white, and no one would do anything to help them. Since segregation was a big deal then, during the trial they were on the Ewells side, even tho they didn't like them. However, Atticus family were known as nigger lovers. Atticus took Tom Robisons case, even tho he knew he wasn't going to win. he still wanted to help the Robisons. Atticus Family shows that everyone is the same and should be treated the same. Today poor families are not called trash, actually some families feel bad for them and help those families that can't get food and clothing.

Families then, and families now are different and alike. In many ways, if it's how they want to represent themselves, of how they treat others. Lastly in the novel Atticus family had a maid named cal. She would cook for them and clean the house and at night she would go home. Hardly anyone has a maid in their family today. Only time some one has a maid today is when they have big houses. All in all, Families have changed through out the years. Most likely they will change in the future.
