FC: The Workplace Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
Pilots have a unique work place. They work in airplane cockpits. in the 1920 pilots were mainly used in war, or in transportation of goods. They used basic gages such as barometers. They communicated by means of visual signals. Pilots needed good eye sight, motor skills and the ability to read gages do basic math and estimations.
During the 1930's and 1940's, the presence of war brought rapid advancements to the definition of a pilot and the definition of an airplane. Pilots now used enclosed cockpits with sleeker, more efficient pilot. With added technology, like radios, it was necessary for pilots to be able to communicate with each other and with ground crew.
A relatively new introduction to the pilots workplace were women. It wasnt unheard of for women to fly planes, but during the 40's to the 50's more women began to fly planes. The women that did fly needed the same skills that the men did. Reading gages communicating over radio and understanding flying condition in addition to flying tests.
In the 1960's and 70's new technology began to be utilized, jet engines. planes now flew faster and longer distances, pilot cockpits had new gages, new flight suites and new techniques of flying.required as well as good communication skills. pilots more than ever needed to understand physics and developing atmospheric conditions
during the later 1970's and through out the 80's pilots became separated into different classes. special skills were necessary to fly certain planes. communication was far more advanced than basic radios. pilots needed many more skills to operate new technology such as autopilot and other modules that provided more control.
Supersonic jets have been around in previous years, but in the 1980's and early 2000's these kinds of airplanes became more popular. Many pilots now had supersonic work places. This required new types of skills because these airplanes were so different.
As pilots work place continues to advance, so will the education and qualifications needed to be a pilot. Future pilots and airplane engineers will both need more and more education. It can no longer be compared to getting a cdl license, much more is required.
