The day was finally here! My first day of kindergarten. Kindergarten, kindergarten, kindergarten. I had practiced the word over and over until I got it right. I had been waiting so long to be old enough to go to school like my brother Max.
A few minutes ago, my mom had called up the stairs “Sophia, time to get up! Put your outfit on and come downstairs for breakfast!” I was feeling a little tired, but I wouldn’t let that slow me down.
I hurried to put on my clothes. They are the best ever because I got to pick them out all by myself! My pink dress has buttons down the front and I have tights with flowers on them. I threw my nice brown shoes with straps on my feet and ran down the stairs.
Mommy, I’m all dressed!” “Great job, Soph,” she said. I looked on the table and was so happy when I saw my favorite breakfast. Mom made me chocolate chip pancakes! “Oooh, thanks mom” I said. “Eat quickly, Sophia, we need to leave soon,” mom warned me. “Okay mom, I’ll hurry.”
I worked on eating my pancakes and thought about how great the day was going to be. I’m going to make lots of friends and have so much fun, I thought. As soon as I was done eating I ran upstairs to brush my teeth and mom put my hair in braids.
“All right Sophie girl, it’s time to head out,” she said. I ran down the stairs, out the door, and hopped into my special seat in the car. I always rode to school with Max and mom before, but I never got to stay. Today my turn was finally here!
When we pulled into the parking lot, I saw lots of kids with their backpacks walking in to school. The school was brown with a bell outside the main red door. Before we got out of the car, I felt like there were butterflies fluttering in my tummy. "Mom, do I have to go?" She looked down at me. "I promise you will love it. You are going to make lots of friends and learn really neat things."
When we pulled into the parking lot, I saw lots of kids with their backpacks walking in to school. The school was brown with a bell outside the main red door. My mom held my hand as we walked in. Lots of other kids were holding hands with their moms and dads, too.
After we walked through the door, there was an office on the right hand side. That's where the principal was. She was tall and had brown, curly hair. | Mom and I kept walking. I was really excited to put my new pink and purple backpack in my cubby. When we got to it, mom helped me put my things in there. I had a special place for my gym shoes and lunch bag. | My teacher Ms. Larsen smiled and waited for me at the door. She was very pretty with her long blonde hair and she had fancy shoes on. Mom knelt down, gave me a big squeeze and kissed my forehead. "I will see you after school. Have a great day, I love you Sophia."
All of a sudden I got really sad and those butterflies weren't there anymore, but tears were. Ms. Larsen grabbed my hand and walked me in. I've never really been away from my mom before, I thought to myself. There were so many new faces and things. The classroom was full of fun stuff. My class and I sat down on the rug that had a big sun on it with sunglasses. Ms. Larsen welcomes us. "Good morning friends! I am so glad you are here today, and I am excited that we will get to learn so much together this year."
I didn't know anybody in my classroom. There were girls that looked like me. Maybe we liked the same things, but I was too scared to ask. Ms. Larsen pointed to our schedule and read it out loud. She said that we would get to go to the library, learn a song about the days of the week, decorate name tags, eat lunch, go to recess and then read a book together. As the day went on and we did some of our activities, some of the kids tried talking to me but I got scared. It seemed like everyone in class was having fun and meeting friends and all I could think about was mom.
I was starting to miss my mom more and more so I went up to Ms. Larsen and asked, “How much time until school is over? I miss my mom.” She smiled at me. “Well Sophia we still have to eat lunch, have recess and then have reading time and your mom will be here to get you before you know it. You're doing really great."
All of a sudden I remembered something. “Will I get to see my brother Max at lunch?” She looked at me again. “Well Sophia all the kindergarteners eat with the other kindergarteners so I don’t think so.” I said “Okay,” but I wanted to cry. Ms. Larsen took our class down to the lunchroom where we got to choose a table. I chose to sit a few seats down from some girls in my class. They had been playing together and talking all day so they didn’t really say much to me, and I ate my lunch alone. It took me a while to eat, I just didn’t feel hungry.
Mom had packed me my favorite foods and left me a note in my box. It said, “Hi Sophia. I hope you’re having lots of fun with Ms. Larsen and meeting new friends. I can’t wait to hear all about it tonight! I love you! XOXO” I didn’t know all the words so a lunch teacher helped me read the note. The note made me start crying. The lunch teacher rubbed my back and said, “Sophia it’s okay, the day is almost over and you’ll get to see your mom soon. Is that why you’re crying?” I could feel tears running down my cheeks. “Yes, mom and I used to eat this lunch together all the time and I miss playing with her. I don’t like kindergarten, I just want to see mom.”
The lunch teacher looked down at me with a smile. “Well sweetie mom is at work, how about we go to the office and let you see your brother Max and call mom?” I thought that was a great idea and actually smiled. “Yes, please,” I told her using my very best manners. We then walked to the office and they called Max's teacher and he came down. Max walked in and looked at the teacher, saying, “I didn't do anything, why am I in trouble?” The teacher smiled and said “Max, you're right. You didn't do anything wrong and you aren't in trouble. Your sister is having a hard time being away from your mom. She's very sad and has been crying so we thought seeing you for a little bit may help.”
“Uh oh where is she?” Max asked. “Follow me,” the teacher said. Max followed the teacher back to the room where I was waiting. When I saw Max I ran up to him and gave him a big hug. He told me, “Soph I know it’s hard being away from mom but it gets easier. You have to make new friends and then you’ll be excited and want to come to school.” I just nodded my head because that’s what mom and dad had told me, too. Max left after telling me that so he wouldn’t miss his class. I then called mom and she told me the same thing and that the day was more than half over and she would be there soon to pick me up, I just had to make it through reading.
I went back to join the class and we read the book Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten. I sat next to Annie, a nice girl with blonde hair. She smiled at me, and I even smiled back. I bet that we’ll be best friends. | After talking about our book and the plan for tomorrow's activities I heard the bell ring. My face lit up with a smile and I ran to my cubby to grab my things and then ran out to find mom waiting for me in the car, anxious to hear all about my day. Today was a little tough, but I'm sure tomorrow will be a great day. I think I like kindergarten after all.
