The New York Knickerbockers, prominently known as the Knicks, are a professional basketball team based in New York City. They are part of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The organization was a founding member of the Basketball Association of America in 1946 and joined the NBA after the BAA and National Basketball League merged. The Knicks are one of only two teams of the original National Basketball Association still located in its original city. The "Knickerbocker" name comes from the pseudonym used by Washington Irving for his A History of New York, which name became applied to the descendants of the original Dutch settlers of what later became New York, and later, by extension, to New Yorkers in general.

It all began on Jun. 6, 1946, when Madison Square Garden was granted a charter franchise in the newly-formed Basketball Association of America. The legendary Ned Irish, who would eventually be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, was the Knicks founding father.

Donnie and Mike – A new Knicks era dawned in the spring of 2008, with the naming of New York native Donnie Walsh as president, basketball operations on Apr. 2, and the hiring of Mike D'Antoni as head coach on May 13.

 Carmelo Anthony | Stephon Marbury

Step 1: Get a detailed value of the franchise. For example, the current estimated value of the New York Knicks is around $550million.

Step2: Gather enough investors to buy a major share of the team, usually in a piecemeal (so, buying the shares/team piece by piece).

Step 3: Submit an offer to the current ownership, generally done through the NBA League Office (specifically, the Office of the Commissioner) Step 4: Make the offer, put up the cash, purchase the team

Step 5: Run the team, make sure everyone is properly paid, continue increasing the value of the team once owned. Step 6: Sell the team when you are ready to sell it or it can't stay solvent.

Pricing for a spot in the NBA team has been fairly consistent over the last five years. CBS in 2010 charged marketers around $1.22 million for a 30-second spot in the championship game, essentially flat versus the previous three years. Per Kantar, CBS was able to name its price in 2007, when the network took in $1.26 million per ad. | Other big spenders include AT&T ($35 million a year ago), Coca-Cola ($25.3 million), Capital One ($24.2 million) and Hewlett-Packard ($21.8 million).
