In order to attend high school one must pay an administration fee (unlike America where there is public education kindergarten through the twelfth grade). Yilan will also have to pass a nationwide entrance exam to determine the prestige of the high school he is accepted too (much like the American University system).

4:00-6:00 Jodie does a sport after school everyday of the week. In the fall she runs cross country and in the spring she plays tennis.
Gao Yilan does not do any sports after school, because by the time school is over, it is dinner time and then he has homework.
6:30 Come home from after school activity and sit down for a family dinner cooked by Jodie's Dad, who finished his work in sales. The meal is normally spaghetti and salad.
7:00 Gao Yilan rides his bike home from school and enjoys sweet and sour pork prepared by his mother. Everyone in his family had a long day at work/ school and were happy to be home. His mom is a language teacher, his dad a sales manager, and Gao is a hardworking, determined student.
9:00-10:00 After dinner and homework, Jodie goes on Facebook and watches T.V. Her favorite show is the Bachelor, where girls compete for a rose to continue on to the next week in hopes that they will marry the handsome bachelor.
7:30-10:30 After dinner time Gao goes straight to homework. He normally has over an hour, but if he finishes early he loves to read. Gao's favorite book is Tom Sawyer. If it were his choice, he would also play video games or watch T.V but his parents do not let him on the weekdays.
Jodie's Future | Jodie hopes to graduate from the Leadership center at Freeman and go on to attend college.
Yilan's Future | When he grows up, Yilan wants to go to college in the United States and study to become a lawyer since "I'm good at talking," he says. He then plans to return to China to work.
In America, girls and boys have very similar opportunities in sports, school, and occupation.
In China, gender equality is not the same as America. The one child policy has caused a severe increase in the boy to girl ratio because Chinese couples want their one child to be a boy. This creates severe gender inequality for girls.
