It is believed that the cave was the site of offerings to the Mayan rain god Chaac around 800 A.D. Researchers have found over 200 ceramic vessels and the skeletal remains of 14 humans (seven of them children), all believed to be sacrificial victims. Almost all of the pottery and skeletal remains have been left in the cave as they were found.
