S: FLL 2008 - 2009
FC: 2008 - 2009 First Lego League 'Climate Connections'
The first step in mastering the Mindstorm NXT robot was to learn about gears and pulleys. These are conveyor belts that were from one of our first assignments. Then we had to learn the programming language and how to build a really good robot!
Our research project challenge was to focus on a problem related to climate. We decided to research rivers & the effects of damming & straightening them. This was an experiment to observe how flowing water erodes and how curves slow the water down. We built our dam out of Legos!
One of the neatest things about our research project is the opportunity to hear from and talk to specialists in the field we're studying. Some people from FEMA came to speak to us about weather and climate change in Central FL, especially hurricanes.
We went to see Dr Work at Stetson and she talked to us about rivers using a 'stream table'.
Accomplishing the missions is trial & error - over & over! | Team - work is what makes it challenging & fun!
 Isaiah | Jesse | Sasha | Christian | Isaac | Andrew | Pryce
 Practice! | Practice!
We wrote a skit to present all our research to the judges. Using community characters and a reporter, we talked about everything we'd learned.
The day before our Qualifying worded certificates and Lego Castle
Tournament coach Nicole gave us fun cleverly- mini-figs as a reward for our hard work all season.
Getting set up at Tournament and checking out the competition!
Rounds up at the mat... So exciting and nerve-wracking! | Then rehashing how we did!
 Then to the Judging Rooms!
Time for lunch and some outside fun!
Then back to the mat for more competition.
What a fun first season in FLL! | We all got cool Climate Connections pins at the awards ceremony.
