S: San Francisco July 2011

 San Francisco July 8-13, 2011

During our trip we stayed on Fisherman's Wharf at the Hyatt Hotel. The temperature was in the 50's & 60's the entire time - cooler than we had expected so ended up buying additional jackets. Our first morning, we walked up the street to Ghiradelli's Square where we ate breakfast at Lori's Cafe (an old style soda fountain).

One of the many hills of San Francisco.

Saturday we rode the Duck, touring San Francisco on land and in the water. Our ride was complete with an enthusatist tour guide & great music. We each had a quacker so we could play along with the music.

Sights from our ride on the Duck.

Lindsay & Roger, starting our journey on the Duck around the city.

As we entered the water on the Duck.

 Lindsay driving the Duck

Walking through China town... We saw some really unusual produce and other unique items for sale in the stores & often times on the sidewalks.

As we left China town we saw some interesting building decor and street lighting.

We ate dinner at the Stinking Rose Restaurant in the Italian part of San Francisco. They serve over 3000 lbs of garlic each month. We had pizza & wine.

Walking up Lombard Street, the "crookedest" street in San Francisco with eight hairpin turns on a 40-degree slope. Beautiful homes and gardens line the street.

From the top of Lombard Street

On our way down | and at the bottom.

We rented bikes on Sunday. As we started our bike tour, the sights of San Francisco were beautiful.

More of what we saw on the bike ride.

Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on our bikes. The Bridge was extremely busy with pedestrian traffic - runners, walkers (with & without strollers), and bike riders - all going both ways on the one walkway since the other side was shut down due to repair construction. But we made it through the crowd and across the bridge!

On the other side of the bridge we biked down the hill to Fort Baker & then on to Sausalito. We stopped & ate pizza at a little Italian restaurant on the hill into Sausalito. After lunch we finished our ride into Sausalito, walked around the shops there & then caught the ferry back to the San Francisco & to our hotel.

Lots of woods going down the hill to Fort Baker. A deer crossed the road in front of us & disappeared into the woods - hard to see but he's there.

The view on the ferry back to San Francisco... a cargo ship passing under the Golden Gate Bridge & Alcatraz Island.

On Monday morning before we returned our bikes to the rental store, Roger & Lindsay took one last ride - down curvy Lombard Street. It was alittle damp & foggy. We got there before the traffic started so they had the entire street to themselves, except one car being filmed for a movie.

Monday we went to Alcatraz Island. Here we are waiting in line for the ferry to the "rock".

Alcatraz Island - a military fort, a prison, reclaimed by Indians & then part of the Golden Gate National Recreaion Area.

 Parts of Alcatraz Island

We had an audio tour of the cell house. Alcatraz housed roughly 300 prisoners. Cells were approximately 5' x 10'.

Roger in the visitors area, a model of the island, the prison library and a photo of some of Alcatraz's most famous prisoners.

The inmate's recreation area, the power plant, & one of the water towers plus the incredible view.

More of Alcatraz. This cannon has been there from the time Alcatraz was a military base.

Some of the landscaping on Alcatraz Island.

San Francisco - From the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge

San Francisco - from the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge

The Bay Bridge, connecting Oakland to San Francisco (photo taken from the ferry, Sausalito to San Francisco)

We walked through Pier 39 and then back to the hotel after a full day of biking and fun.

Tuesday we started our day early with a ride on the Cable Car. Our trip ended at Union Square where we were off for a little shopping. | Goats on the hillside

 Sites from the Cable Car.

A healthy breakfast at another Lori's Diner at Union Square.

After our shopping experience in Union Square we took the Street Car back to Fisherman's Wharf & caught our tour bus for the journey to Muir Woods.

On our bus to Miur Woods we passed the military cementary at the Presidio, a former military base now a public park. We passed the Palace of Fine Arts and various other SF attractions. We then drove over the Golden Gate Bridge (our second trip over the bridge) where we stopped to view more sites of the city.

As we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge on the tour bus.

 Across the Golden Gate Bridge...

And then down in Sausalito again.

From Sausalito we took a red school bus to Muir Woods National Park through some narrow, winding roads.

We were greeted by a tree that was 20 stories tall.

 Muir Woods National Park

Trees trees, and more trees - big, old, and beautiful!

 More beautiful old trees.

As we returned to Sausalito we passed horses grazing in a field.

After our tour of Muir Woods we went back to Ghirardelli Square for more chocolate. | Roger shopping for gifts at Pier 39. | Lindsay modeling the sunglasses she purchased.

 More sites of the city.

Flowers on the Wharf. | Roger, as the Bush Man. | Entertainment on Fisherman's Wharf. | Window of bread.

Wednesday ended our stay in San Francisco. We're off to the Airport from our hotel.
