1: Cozumel (Mayan: Island of the Swallows) (Kutsmil in Modern Maya) is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen, and close to the Yucatan Channel. Cozumel is one of the ten municipalities (municipios) of the state of Quintana Roo. Cozumel is a tourist destination for its balnearios, scuba diving, and snorkeling. The main town on the island is San Miguel de Cozumel.
2: We were in Cozumel December 12 - 19, 2009. While there we stayed at the Coral Princess. The weather was definitely better than at home, but not as nice as you would expect for Mexico. It was overcast most of the week, but we still had a great time. The little red car in the picture was our ride for the week.
16: Punta Sur is a one thousand hectare ecological reserve. It was created for the conservation, & preservation of the 5 ecosystems contained within. It offers visitors a variety of ecological tourist attractions: Celarain Light House, Mayan ruins, coastal dunes, mangroves, reefs, lagoon systems, & beautiful beaches. We arrived a bit late in the day so missed most of the tours, but we did get to go up the observation tower, & the light house.
22: View from the top of the Celarain Light House - gorgeous! Inside the light house is a navigational museum with exhibits of Mayan navigators, buccaneers, & a display on how the light house keepers lived in the 1930s. The Celarain Light House has 2km of beaches that are a designated sanctuary for sea turtles who come every year & deposit their eggs.
32: Right: Jon & I with Mino, a local shop owner. Mino taught us how to spot good quality silver; a very useful skill. Above & on the next page: There were many shops & restaurants around this beautiful central park in downtown San Miguel. Mino's shop was one of them.
