1: Year of the Rabbit | turning point | dark of the moon dark of the year snow rutted on the city street where the cars run in their grooves the homes tuck themselves into drawn curtains the river sealed no one else to see the hare leaping down the road in his pale winter coat long ears a-lop like the moon strayed from his snow-speckled sky for the compact joy of earth and coming in from the cold we feel foreign to ourselves as though we have been turned into new creatures, faintly radiant we are turning into the new year, year of the rabbit year of possible peace oh my dear moon on your light, plenilunar paws | - alice major
2: j | j | anuary | ... brings the snow, makes our feet and fingers glow ... | This year started off with a continuation from December 2010 - lots and lots of snow! In fact, for the entire month of January, there were only four (yes four!) days that did not have a trace of snow in all of "Minnesnowta"! Needless to say, we spent finding ways to enjoy winter as best as possible. Maleah got to try out her new sled that she got from Santa. She also got to see Sesame Street Live at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Ethan, of course, was too little to be able to enjoy any of the snow. He did, however, manage to find ways to still have fun. He figured out that he was strong enough to push himself up and began learning to crawl. He practiced and practiced until he got it right! He also played a lot in his exersaucer, often with Maleah right there to entertain him. Most fun of all, though, was bath time and the ability to splash around until Mom got soaked!
6: f | ebruary | ... brings the rain, thaws the frozen lake again ... | This month was filled with football, friendship, and fun. Mom and the kiddos got to watch and cheer on the Packers as they defeated the Steelers in this year's Super Bowl XLV, 31 - 25. (Sorry Dad, maybe next year!) Ethan also got to have a Valentine's Day get together with his birthing class. As usual, it was fun to see how much everyone has grown! | f
10: m | m | arch | ... brings breezes loud and shrill, stirs the dancing daffodil ... | Trying to beat the winter "blahs" is not always easy. This month we managed to chase them away by trying to be silly (which isn't very hard to do in this family). Maleah was a biker chick at the Harley Davidson store. at the Mall of America She also showed us who was the boss as she strutted around in her NYPD shirt. Hanging out with animals and making funny animal noises was also on the menu for the month. Best of all was playing on the drums and making Ethan laugh. Not only did was see Ethan getting bigger by the day, his infectious smiles and laughs also continued to light up the room. Like Maleah, his "musical genius" has also started to emerge.
14: a | a | pril | As the weather became more tolerable this month, we managed to find activities to get us back outside as much as possible We went to see the farm babies at the Minnesota Zoo. What a fun and memorable day that was! Ethan got to see the animals up close for the first time, while Maleah got to feed the baby animals. Maleah got to scoop up lots of Easter treats at the annual Rosemount Easter Egg hunt while Ethan eagerly watched. She even got a visit with the Easter bunny afterwards! Ethan showed us that he was quite the mover and shaker. Since he was now the expert crawler, he figured out that he could start exploring more around the house. While he was getting into things that he was not supposed to, it was that smile of his that made it hard to stay mad at him for very long! | ... brings the primrose sweet, scatters daises at our feet ...
18: m | m | ay | ... brings flocks of pretty lambs, skipping by their fleecy dams ... | We finally ditched the winter gear this month! We took advantage of the outdoors, of course, and spent time welcoming the warm weather. This month was unusually busy. Maleah performed her first dance recital and did an awesome job. We took a family road trip to Duluth, Minnesota and went exploring around town. Ethan was now practicing his walking and trying to keep up with Maleah. Mother's Day was spent at home with the kids. We had a cookout and Mom got nice gifts from everyone.
21: to Duluth, Minnesota
26: j | une | ... brings tulips, lilies, roses, fills the children's hand with posies ... | Ethan turned the "Big One" on the 14th of this month. His day was celebrated at Teddy Bear Park, located in Stillwater, Minnesota with family and friends. He was most excited about eating. Sandwiches. Chips. Fruit. Whatever was there, he ate it. When it came to the cake, however, he ate it with such caution as to not get his face dirty for cake eating pictures! | j
28: It's time to | and eat some cake!
30: j | j | uly | ... brings cooling showers, apricots and gillyflowers ... | It was Maleah's turn to celebrate a birthday, and oh did she celebrate it in style! This month she turned the big 4 this and invited her friends to play with her at Adventure Peak, located at the Edinborough Park in Edina, Minnesota. Earlier this month, Dad entertained the kiddos with his fireworks "show" on the driveway to celebrate the 4th of July. By the looks on their faces, they were obviously into the fireworks that nothing else could distract them! Being silly has become a part of the everyday norm for this family and when it comes to taking pictures, that is no exception. Both kiddos love taking pictures for Mom, and the sillier, the better!

45: Fall was fast approaching and what better way to celebrate its arrival than a day at the Sever's Corn Maze in Shakopee, Minnesota.
46: fun at the straw bale maze
47: The theme of the corn maze was "Out of this World" and the challenge was to look for pictures of "Astronaut Sever" and reading fun facts about outer space. Dad and Maleah were on the hunt to do just that.
48: animal fun
49: what a great day!
50: ... brings the pheasants, then to gather nuts is pleasant ... | o | o | ctober | This month started off with a trip to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Maleah had her tonsils and adenoids taken out. She was not afraid one bit and was very brave. After the surgery, she got to spend the night with Mom by her side. She watched a lot of television and of course, at all the ice cream and popsicles she wanted! After some period of recuperating, Maleah was back to her usual energetic self. We went to a park in Lakeville where both kiddos had no fear going up and down the play set and tornado slide. We also went to a park in Apple Valley where the kids (and Dad) discovered a community xylophone, and music began to emerge. Maleah also helped with raking the leaves in the back yard. We went to a pumpkin farm in Shakopee, Minnesota, where everyone got to pick out their own pumpkins. It was a beautiful day to do that as a family. We enjoyed it so much it will likely become an annual ritual for the Engel family! The Rosemount Fire Department had an open house and everyone was in awe at the fire trucks and other rescue vehicles on site. It was hard to tell who had more fun, the kiddos or Dad?!? Ethan also got to meet up with his birth class friends at Lookout Ridge in Woodbury, in honor of Halloween. However, we also went to the Minnesota Zoo for Halloween, and got many awesome treats.

60: ... brings the blast, then the leaves are whirling fast ... | n | n | ovember | The year is quickly coming to a close and the weather is cooling down. It was this month that we got our first snowfall - which is late for Minnesota! The snow did not stick around for long, though, as the temperatures were still relatively mild. This month was all about spending time with family and giving thanks. For Thanksgiving, we went to Bumpa and Grandma Pat's house, where Aunt Laurie, Uncle Ben, and cousins Eli, Ella, and Braden had visited. Aunt "T-Bone" also made a visit to our house earlier that month, and she entertained the kiddos as she usually does. We can't forget about eating good food this month, either! Of course we had the usual turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving - and lots of it! But what could be better than eating pizza at Chuck E. Cheese's?
66: it's all about fun and games ...
67: ... and stuffing your face!
68: ... brings the sleet, blazing fire, and Christmas treat ... | d | ecember | d | This month the camera was on overload. We spent the entire month out and about and the pictures can best summarize all of the activities our family did.

86: Smiling is infectious; you catch it like the flu. When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too. I passed around the corner and someone saw my grin. When he smiled I realized I'd passed it on to him. I thought about that smile then I realized it's worth. A single smile, just like mine could travel round the earth. So, if you feel a smile begin, don't leave it undetected. Let's start an epidemic quick, and get the world infected!! KEEP THE SMILES GOING.
88: This year was a blast and I loved documenting all of the things we did as a family. I will always look back at this book and cherish the times we spent together! Memories will continue to be made and showcasing them will always be a pleasure. I hope you enjoyed perusing this book as much as I enjoyed putting this together. Love, Mom
