FC: The Adoption by: Lindsay Streit
The Adoption by: Lindsay Streit I dedicate this to my family and friends.
"Maria," my mom called me from downstairs. "Be down in a minute." All I could here was the sound of my dog barking and a slight mumble of my parents talking. I hated at friends houses when their siblings were always so loud and obnoxious. I luckily am an an only child so I don't have to worry about all that.
I came down the stairs and saw a pile of pancakes on the table. Right before I started to eat my parents said they had some news for me. "We're adopting a 12 year old girl named Morgan," my mom said.
I was shocked! How could they be adopting a girl after all these years? No I'm dreaming, but this was no dream my parents were being serious. "I know its very surprising but we decided it would be good to have a new addition to the family and for you to have a little sister," my mom said next.
"No! Why? I don't want a little sister I like being an only child!" I didn't understand, why they would want another kid. "Morgan is a very nice girl and she we will be making a room for her," my father said.
"Well, when will she be coming?" "Morgan will come on Sunday," her mom replied. "Sunday? That's in 2 days!" I said. "Yes so we will have 2 days to get a room ready for her. Here is a picture of her."
I could not believe this! I had a 2 day notice of a girl, which I didn't even know, who would soon be my sister and I would have to live with her! I headed back upstairs to my room as my mother told me and cleaned it.
I got a room ready for Morgan to sleep in. The furniture truck was here with a dresser for Morgan.
The furniture men brought the dresser into the room and put it against the wall.
The construction men were also here to knock out one part of my wall for a closet for Morgan. It was going to be the same size as mine. It was a walk in closet and it had a section for each article of clothing.
Tomorrow my parents will go pick Morgan up. I couldn't believe that tomorrow there would be someone else living in my house. All I hope for is that Morgan will be nice and hopefully not try to take over my life.
This morning when I woke up I could already hear my parents getting ready to leave. I have to stay home to make sure the dog doesn't mess up the house. When I went down stairs my parents were heading out the door. "We'll be back in a few hours. There is some breakfast on the table."
As I was sitting there waiting for them to come home I started to think about when school would start again. I realized that she would be considered the "new girl" and I would be her sister.
I hope people will like her because it won't only put her in a bad spot, but me too. If people don't like her than they may start to turn against me too.
I can hear the garage door going up. They must be home. Time to meet Morgan. When my mom entered the house, she said, "Morgan this is your new sister Maria."
"Hello," Morgan said. I said "hello" back. "Why don't you give Morgan a tour of the house and show her your room?" "Sure," I said to my mom.
I lead her to the family room then down into the basement. It was a little bit awkward since we didn't know each other and we weren't saying much to each other.
We finally made our way to my room and then to her's. I told her where she could put her things. "This room is so big!" Morgan said. "Really? I don't think it's that big." "This is your closet" I said next. "This is the biggest closet I've ever seen!" she said.
"It's the same size as mine. There is a section for each article of clothing." So far she seems nice but I'm still not thrilled with the fact of having a sister.
"Morgan!" my mom called her from downstairs. "There's cookies on the table," she said when we came downstairs. "Here," my father said and handed her a present. A present? Why would she be getting a present for nothing?
Morgan's facial expression suddenly changed and my parents looked shocked. "Maria go to your room! I do not want to hear another word out of your mouth.," my mother told me. I silently headed to my room. | "What's this for?" she said. "It's a welcoming present." my dad said. "Why does she get a welcoming present? It's not like we actually want her here."
I started to become very jealous of Morgan because she started to take my attention away. I knew next she would start taking some of my clothes and now since there were two of us my mother would have to split costs evenly between us, so I would be getting half of what I get now.
Downstairs my mom was saying "Maria didn't mean any of that, sometimes she just gets jealous of other kids."
Later that night, when both of us were silently sitting in a room by ourselves, Morgan finally said, "I understand you don't like me being here so I'll try to be out of your way as much as possible"
I felt bad for her. I didn't mean to make her feel that bad, I was just really mad at the time. I could tell she wasn't the type of girl who actually planned on coming in and taking over my life.
"I didn't mean what I said earlier," I told her, "I was mad and sometimes I don't think before I talk." "I can understand how you feel about all this. I had a family once and we adopted a girl and I thought she would take all my attention away just like you're thinking now," she said. "Why aren't you living with that family now?" I asked. "When I was eight we got into a car accident and my parents and my adoptive sister died, I was the only one that lived, there was no other family that could take me so I was put in an orphanage." "I'm sorry," I said.
I started to feel very sympathetic for her. I had the completely wrong idea of her, she wasn't trying to steal my life she just wanted a family, like the one she used to have.
I no longer felt jealous of her, but I was ready to accept her into the family. I said, "Goodnight." Then we both went upstairs, to bed.
The next morning Morgan was still sleeping, so I went downstairs to talk to my parents. "I'm sorry for what I said yesterday. I didn't mean any of it."
"I hope you learn to love Morgan as your sister," my father said. "I already have." Everything was good now, better than it ever was before.
