36: October 15 - 28, 2011 October 15 - left DFW at 5:45 p.m. October 16 - Arrived Juliaca at 1 p.m. Took a combi to Puno and the Duque Inn Walked downhill to the town square and later had dinner. Walking back uphill at the 12,565 feet altitude was hard. October 17 - Took a boat to Las Islas Uros and spent the night October 18 - Returned to Puno. Had a nice meal and entertainment at Balcones October 19 - Hired a taxi to take us to Sillustani, then to the airport at Juliaca for our 1:50 p.m. Lan flight from Juliaca to Cuzco, arriving at 2:45. Took a taxi to Teatro Inka Hostal October 20 - Ken arrives October 21 - Walked up to church and Sacsaywamán. Did some shopping. Elise arrived in Cuzco. Ate and went to the briefing for our Inca Trail at the United Mice office. October 22 - We were picked up at the hotel early morning by Walter and the porters. The hike began at the Sacred Valley. We crossed the Urubamba River by bridge and waited for Walter. Arrived at our camp, LLulluchapampa after dark and in the rain. October 23 - Had a nice breakfast and began the climb up to Dead Woman's pass (Warmiwañuska) We had lunch at Pacaymayu Alto and had a short rest before starting the ascent to the ruins of Runkurakay. The second pass of the day was 3680 meters. We saw the ruins of Sayacmarca on our way down to our campsite at Chaquichoca. October 24 - On our third day we hiked mainly down the mountains. We walked around the ruins of Phuyutamarca and then descended to Wyñay Wayna campsite. October 25 - We got up very early to be at the entrance to hike the last 5 kilometers to the Sun Gate of Machu Picchu. This was the easiest hiking day, but we were all too tired to spend much time at Machu Picchu so went to Aguas Calientes where we all had pizza and Jeff and I had the smallest Pisco sours in the world. Took the train to Ollantaytambo and the bus from there to Cuzco. October 26 - Had a leisurely morning before taking Ken to the airport. Jeff and I shopped and had massages. October 27 - Shopped more October 28 - After finding that our reservations from Lima to Dallas had been canceled, we spent the morning dealing with that. When we arrived at the Cuzco airport, we experienced our first earthquake or as they said "just a temblar". Flights were on time and we arrived back in Dallas on time.
