S: GRANDPA HENRY'S 99TH

FC: HAPPY 99TH BIRTHDAY TO GRANDPA HENRY MAZEL TOV!!!

Dear Dad, In 1936 you married Amy. You had the four of us and then look what happened.... Many kisses and hugs from, Char and Lou Jon and Helen Mort and Carol Naomi and Jeff

D | Dear Grandpa Henry, Happy Birthday ! This is me standing on the top of a volcano in Hawaii last year. When I think about you and Grandma Amy, I always think about visiting you in Beach Haven, even though I was very young then. I remember your house, and picking mint leaves in your yard. And I remember thinking that the waves were so big that they were going to carry me away ! I also remember visiting you in South Orange in the summer when I was 12, and you took me to the pool. I loved the way your house smelled like coffee. Lots of Love, Linda Orkin Lewin (married to Jon Lewin) Daughter of Char and Lou

Hi Grandpa Henry, Happy 99th birthday ! I remember when I was little and I used to call you "Grandpa Hungry." I know that you were in Cleveland the week I was born, and that my mom finally had me after she ate a big fat hotdog at Corky and Lenny's with you and Grandma Amy. I am in college now and I insisted that my mom let me bring the afghan that Grandma Amy made for me to my dormitory room. I don't think I could sleep without it. Love, Sarah Orkin Lewin Daughter of Jon and Linda

Dear Grandpa Henry, I know you have a picture of me playing your bass, but I also like to play the accordion. Your bass has been great for me; I bring it with me to all of my concerts and it sounds so much better than the school bass ! I wish you could hear me play it. I hope you have a happy birthday. Love, Benjamin Orkin Lewin Son of Jon and Linda

A Memory of Grandpa Henry Dear Grandpa, On the occasion of your 99th birthday I wanted to share with you one of my favorite memories. I came to New Jersey to visit you and Grandma when I was 12 yrs. old. You took me to New York City to see the play Annie. I was so excited to see a Broadway show and you and Grandma treated me like a princess ! It was a very special day for me, spending time with my grandparents in the big city. Enjoy your birthday and know that I am thinking of you and all the happy times we share. I look forward to seeing you at my next visit. Love, Laura (married to Dan Wolkoff) Daughter of Char and Lou

Dear Grandpa Henry, Coming to visit you in Palm Springs was always my favorite part of vacation. We would pick fruit and then use your juicer to make delicious lemonade. Then our family would sit and chat with you on your beautifully decorated couches. I remember you liked to weave pictures. I have one of your art pieces hanging in my room still. Thank you and happy birthday ! Love, Rebecca Daughter of Dan and Laura

Dear Grandpa Henry, I ate my first York Peppermint Patty at your house in California back in 1998. I was 5 yrs. old then. I remember how sweet and minty the candy tasted. You told me to try the candy because it was the best one. It was one of the greatest tastes ever to enter my mouth. Who would have thought that one bite sized piece of candy could have such a huge impact on someone's life ? Now, every time I bite into a York Peppermint Patty, I think of you. Deliciously yours, William Wolkoff Son of Dan and Laura

Nathan Wolkoff Son of Dan and Laura Winner of National Bible Contest Will compete in international contest in Israel in September 2010

Hi Grandpa ! Happy 99th birthday! I included this photo because it was taken in Israel. I know that you are very fond of Israel and I remember seeing many photos from your travels there. I hope to take many more trips to Israel over the years. I still live in Cleveland with my wife, Stefanie. She helps children with their speech. I manage several jazz musicians and run a drum camp every year. I enjoy working in music and think of you every time I see a great upright bass player ! I enjoyed seeing your paintings during my last visit. You have real talent as an artist and I hope to see more paintings the next time I am able to visit. Have a happy and healthy birthday ! Love, Steven (married to Stefanie) Son of Char and Lou

HAPPY 99TH BIRTHDAY! If not for your family I wouldn't have mine. Thank you and happy 99th birthday. Love, Bob, Sue, Carolyn, and David Chester

 Daughter of Jon and Helen

A HAIKU (OR TWO) FOR A WONDERFUL JEW Almost a cent'ry Of music, prayer, feet, smiles, hugs, And best: salami. If I'm lucky and I reach ninety-nine like you: Rest on my laurels. Sam Simon, (engaged to Brittani) Son of Mort and Carol

Well, Grandpa Henry, you survived WWI, the Spanish Flu, the Russian Revolution, the Spanish Civil War, the Great Depression, WWII, and you were still only a third of the way to this birthday ! Then came Korea, McCarthy, the space race, the civil rights movement, Vietnam, the Khmer Rouge, the energy crisis, and you still had another third of the way to go to this great day. Along the way, you played a fine stand-up bass, prepared kishkes for 360 people and served them to the kids, and ministered as rabbi-by-the-sea to the chosen of Beach Haven, New Jersey, and even pulled a splinter of mine - a surgical procedure I hope to remember vividly until I myself am 99 - and beyond ! But on top of it all, and most importantly, you have been a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather ! How grateful I am to be able to send these words to celebrate your life so far, and to wish you another 99 terrific years! Love, Josh (married to Shu) Son of Carol and Stepson of Mort

I first recall hearing about Grandpa Henry's love of painting from Morton. I must say, I was surprised. However, shortly after this, I began seeing photos of his extraordinary work. It seemed he had bloomed overnight into a full fledged artiste ! When later speaking with Grandpa Henry on the phone he described his devotion (and great success) at his new craft ! What a remarkable thing to find a colleague in the family. Your paintings are beautiful ! Happy Birthday ! Sarah (partner,Noga) Daughter of Carol and Stepdaughter of Mort
