S: Glacier National Park - 2010
FC: Glacier National Park - 2010
This trip was intended to be our last big family camping trip together before Andrew headed out for his mission in the Philippines. Quincy Larsen, his "special" friend came along. Let the fun and adventures begin!
Getting set up is half the fun! | Says who? | Andrew, step away from the firepit... Oh no! Too late! | SQUIRREL!
And getting set up in the rain is even MORE fun :o)
But sunshine and rainbows always follow the rain
Exploring our beautiful, beachfront property | Really Andrew? Did you just do what I think you did?!?! | It is a law of humanity that children, boys especially, can not stand in the presence of large bodies of water without throwing and skipping any available rock into it. This became one of the top three past-times.
Our first day in camp, we decided to hang around and relax a little. There was a trailhead right next to our campsite, so we went on a leisurely hike. Well, more of a stroll, really... | Ready, set... JUMP!
Ahhh.... what a view! | Woody the woodpecker was here
We also spent part of our first day paddling around on the lake. Amazing how much fun you can have playing "bumper boats" :) | On the other hand, you can have a lot of fun just hanging out... with the right person! | We had little neighbors who shared the lake with us
Playing games, both inside and outside the tent, was the second favorite past-time. "I doubt it", "Connect 4" and "Trouble" kept us laughing | I DOUBT IT! | What, you don't believe I have 5 queens? | Oh, and sleeping was the other favorite past-time...
Wood chopping, fire building and smoke bending | Evolution of a fire... | #1: Fuel: immaculately constructed kindling structure | @2: heat: apply the lit match | #3: Luck: keep fingers crossed... | Et VOILA! Fire! | Andrew was the self-proclaimed fire starter. If he wasn't sleeping or playing games, he was splitting wood into kindling or building/tending a fire. Very manly, no? | Craig snuck in a little wood chopping when Andrew wasn't looking | Meanwhile, Quincy was the smoke bender. You didn't want to get her mad at you :o)
Campfires: Relaxin', Roastin' and hot, gooey s'mores | Aren't you going to share, Andrew? | Taking relaxing to a whole new level :) | The epitome of "golden brown perfection"
Hiking to Avalanche Lake with Ranger Steve | Stromatolites - fossils of ancient organisms responsible for creating an oxygen-rich atmosphere. | Look, Ma, I'm a tree! | Anyone in there?
After a huge volcano left several feet of ash over the area, Angie Algae came into a barren wasteland, and realized that she couldn't survive by herself. Then Fred the Fungus came along, and they took a "lichen" to each other, and their marriage has been "on the rocks" ever since. | 400 year old tree
The day for our river rafting trip started out sunny, but rain clouds and a chilly wind quickly dimmed our enthusiasm. We grabbed all the rain gear we had and headed out to meet our rafting guides. On the way, Andrew folded his arms and said a prayer, asking for sunny skies. We divvied up our rain gear, and added our life jackets and helmets. Our bus ride to the putting out point was filled with off-color humor provided by one of the raft guides. Not cool So far the day wasn't going so well :o( But when we got to the river, we were assigned to one of the quieter, less profane guides, and the sun came out and stayed until we got out of the raft. Literally. It began to sprinkle 15 seconds later. Thanks for the prayer, Andrew! | Boy scout motto: be prepared. Just in case the prayer doesn't do it... | It's gotta be the hair! | Can you say "adorkable"? | I make this look good! | River Rafting!
Rafting on the Flathead River. Our guide explained that the rapids we would experience were rated between 2 and 3 on a 4 point scale. As we approached our first rapids, rated a 2, Jacob appeared nervous. But after tackling this, Jacob's attitude was more like, "Bring it! Let's do a 4!"
Epic fun... | Our river guide, "Danger" He had the voice and Southern drawl of Matthew McConaughey, but not exactly the looks :o)
 and epic scenery
Going to the Sun Road | We had hoped for clear, sunny skies, but the day was cold and overcast, with a low cloud cover. Yet the views were still breath-taking. Glacial waterfalls and streams were everywhere, and we got a glimpse of a glacier in the distance.
There is road construction along much of the road. Needless to say, this requires some unusual working conditions | The "weeping wall" is a long stretch of rocky cliff that drips water continually
Some bighorn sheep posed for the camera near Logan Pass
The sun came out, and we hiked along Lake Mary. The scenery was incredible and the hike was full of giggles and laughs. | More epic scenery | Lake Mary | We looked anxiously for WharWhilfs every time we saw a puddle along the trail
More epic scenery! | Playing "Parcour" | Uh... Now what? | We were excited to see a deer on the trail early in our hike. But we soon realized that this trail belonged to the deer, and we were intruding on their space. | We looked anxiously for WharWhilfs every time we passed a puddle...
Ooops! You didn't see that, did you? | Although we looked, we never saw a pica in the wild. This was the closest we came to one. | Don't let the eyes fool you - I'm not really Satan's pet squirrel
Beautiful Wildflowers and Wildlife | I took another 50 photos of deer, but these will be plenty :o)
More animals... | ...we wish we'd seen :o)
...And a few completely random things | What?!?! Bored kids? Never seen this before! | Talk about "Matchy-Matchy"! | A Mountie Wannabe | A patriotic dinosaur, eh? | Do you really want to eat these noodles?
Crazy, fun times! | If it quacks like a duck... | Anyone ever seen Siamese animal crackers? | The long-anticipated sequel to "Who Pooped in the Park?" | Oh, look, Martha! It's a big 'un! | I'm too sexy for my hair... | too sexy for my feet
Too cool for you! | Too sexy for my feet... | Too sexy for my bear
Our last night at Glacier - beautiful sunset over McDonald Lake
Jacob finished his Junior Ranger activity book on his own, with possibly a trace of enthusiasm! Sadly, this will be his last Junior Ranger opportunity... | Taking down the tent and packing everything up. How are we going to get all this in the trailer?
