10: A White Family Story In 1866 after service with the Union Army, Alfred Bennet Hicks married Harriet Bliss and moved from New York to Michigan. Their oldest daughter, Mary Eaton Hicks, was born in 1870. When Mary was 10, the family moved by covered wagon to Livingston. Montana. As the oldest daughter every night Mary made biscuits in the reflector oven by the campfire with Indians sometimes watching. Frederick White came West and fell in love with Mary who had grown into a spirited, black-haired beauty, riding around the ranch with no saddle. After marriage they lived in a sod hut where Ernest White was born, but they soon moved back to the state of New York.
