FC: The Nervous System | By:Drew Bontrager | It what makes us live! Without it we'll die
In this book I will explain the nervous system. I will tell you about the neurons, spinal cord, medulla oblongata, cerebrum, and cerebellum. I will tell you about how they work together to help us through daily life. Also about all the harmful things you can do to hurt your brain. | Why?
Neurons | Neurons are tiny nerve cells, they carry messages from place to place. they serve to help us communicate. They are made up of a cell membrane, nucleus, dendrites, synapse, and axon. | There are three different types of neurons | 1. The first neuron I'm going to talk about is called a sensory neuron. These sensory neurons carry messages from sense organs(skin, eyes, ears, nose, and tongue) then to the brain and spinal cord. They help us taste and feel. 2. Motor neurons come next. They carry messages from the brain or spinal then to a muscle or gland, causing movement or secretion. Motor neurons help us move. 3.Association neurons are in the brain and spinal cord. They connect the sensory and motor neurons. Association neurons connect and receives our messages we send to the brain. Whether its to kick the ball our that tastes sour.
Spinal Cord | The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord. The spinal cord is a bunch of nerves wrapped around our vertebrae. There are 31 pairs of nerves that, wrap around our vertebrae, send messages to and from the spinal cord. We could not receive messages from the neurons to help send them to our brain. We would not be able to tell if a hot pan is hot our not and if we should let go. So we need our spinal cord.
Brain | Main areas in the brain are the cerebrum, medulla oblongata, and the cerebellum. The brain is protected by our skull, 3 tissues called meninges and a shock absorbing liquid called cerebrospinal. | With out our brain we couldn't do anything. Those titles you see each do a specific job and are make up the brain and help us through daily life.
Cerebrum | The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. It is divided by a fissure, into two halves called hemispheres. There is a surface area called a cortex. Each cerebral cortex has a job. Like our motor skills(muscle movement) are two inches wide and run over our brain between our ears. Sight is found in the back of the cerebrum. So our cerebrum is very important. | Medulla Oblongata | Our lowest part of our brain is the medulla oblongata. It is also connected to our spinal cord. The medulla is made up of gray and white matter. The white matter is on the outside of the medulla and is like a path way to the top of the brain, for neuron messages. The gray matter is what helps us digest, breath, and controls our heart rate. With out our medulla we could die.
The cerebellum is right below and behind the cerebrum. Its divided into two hemispheres. The main function of out cerebellum is to help us balance, also coordination. If our cerebellum becomes damaged our muscular movements will be unpredictable. | Cerebellum
If the spinal cord gets injured then the person who got injured would be paralyzed from the point of injury and down, for ever. Same for the Brain. If the certain parts of the brain get injured we could not be able to talk or walk and much more. The brain and spinal cord can never heal its self. So once its damaged its damaged for life. | Unlike the brain or spinal cord the neurons can regrow an axon. | So if you do drugs our smoke or harm your body with chemicals think twice before you do. Because once you kill that brain cell, it's never coming back!
