FC: The Richards Family

 Created By: Jaelise Thompson

While in New Orleans helping after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, I stumble upon a single parent family in the parenting stage. It was a mother with her two children. They lived in a heavily damaged home. | There were no windows and the roof was slightly caved in. The porch was swept away by the hurricane causing it to be difficult to get in and out of the house. Their living conditions were as they were homeless. I then introduced myself to them and in return they did the same. I found out that the mother Justice, 32, was a former chef earning $38,770 per/year who lost her job due to the hurricane. Her two children Harmony, 14, and Joel, 16, are school age students who in the past attended a destroyed high-school.

They all value family, unity, comfort ability, self expression, self-esteem, and friendship. What separated them was their interest.

Justice, 32, enjoyed cooking, shopping, spending time with family, exercising, movies, and money. Harmony, 14, enjoyed basketball, track, shopping, swimming, school, friends, money, clothes, the mall, and summer. | Joel on the other hand, likes basketball, friends, clothes, summer, and money along with his sister, but also like football and baseball. | This family was humble and loving of each other but they were missing one thing, a decent home to share and express their love for each other, so I decided as a help from the disaster to build them home.

I will be building a three story home for the Richards Family. This home will consist of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a nice sized living room, dining room and kitchen. Its exterior designs will contain the colors of black and tan. | It will have a porch that goes half way around the back and a quality sized yard for cookouts and family gatherings. I will install a fire extinguisher along with a smoke alarm and a security system in case of fire or someone breaking into their home. I will also build an extra room for studying or a game room for when company comes over so they can enjoy themselves. When building this house I will consider all of the information about them that I learned to makes this a comfortable, but yet affordable home for the three of them.

 Location

The Richards Family has decided that they want to live in Covington, Georgia with their grandmother and Justice’s older brother. This was a good place to choose because there are many economic opportunities for Justice in the many restaurants in Covington.. Covington is located in the Southern part of the US. It is a fine place to live. It is very grassy and has many plains with a few hills. The climate for this area ranges from 31.30 F to 52.10 F in January and in July from 68.30F to 90.60F.Even though Covington is a great place to live it is still at risk of natural disasters. In Covington the earthquake risk is 48, tornado index: 79, hurricane: 134, hail index: 108, wind index: 218, weather: 117, and air pollution: 73.

In Covington, the Richards family will be located at zip code 30016 where the population is 48,668 and has a population density of 521. This area is suburban and fit for their type of family. The sales tax rate is 7.00% and | the median age of residents is 31.18. An average person living in this area will have a household income at about $57,548. 73.60% are white collar and 26.40% are blue collar. This area is great because the crime | risks aren’t that high. The crime risk is 51, personal is 31, and property is 64. The median home sale price in this area is $124,200. Transportation to work through public is 0.00%, driving is 96.00%, and walking or biking is 1.00%.

This neighborhood is residential and commercial. It is also heterogeneous. In this area Joel and Harmony will be attending Newton High School where the educational climate is average. The expense the taxpayers will pay for each child will be$5,495, which is fairly cheap. | At this school the technology measure is median-low and the test scores is 62% in reading and 92% in math. In their neighborhood the surrounding facilities are grocery stores, shopping malls, a car repair shop, multiple gas stations, schools, libraries, gyms, the public pools, shopping plazas, and plenty of restaurants all of which Justice could apply for a great job.

 Site, Dwelling, and Mortgage

The 0.61 site that I selected for this family is square and relatively flat. It landscaping consists of fertilized grass with a beautiful flower bed in the front. It has a few well cut bushes and a growing garden. This 1,474 square foot home is a split-level. It comes to a price of $95,000 dollars with a down-payment of $19,000 dollars. It has a conventional, fixed-rate mortgage and a 30 year loan term. The fixed interest rate is 4% meaning the monthly payment would be $372.03, which isn’t that bad for a beautiful home. What more could you ask for?
