Shirley Mae Clegg Ward Mother of Jan and Lynn Ward Grandmother of Amy (Lefler), Adam Tanner, Alyson (Hamilton) and Nicholas Tanner. Great Grandmother of Camden, McKay, Bailee, Naomi, Jordan, Logan, Elsa, Hayden, and Eldon. Dedicated to our angel grandchildren, Camden, McKay, Bailee, Naomi, Jordan, Logan, Elsa, Hayden, Eldon, and other grandchildren to come. Written by Grandma Jan Tanner Copyright Christmas 2010
Grandma Shirley was born on March 6, 1933 to Levi Clegg and Marion Jukes Clegg. She had three sisters and one brother. She was born on the kitchen table!
Do you know what was “styling” in Grandma Shirley’s day? She was a “styling” young lady and liked to have up-to-date shoes. Her parents gave her money to buy some sturdy shoes that would last a long while because they did not have a lot of money. She could not resist and bought the more in fashion shoes. | What do you think of these cute shoes?
The Clegg family went on outings every Saturday to the Hot Pots at the Homestead in Heber, Utah.
Grandpa Levi liked the Salt Lake Bees baseball games. He enjoyed taking the family. Grandma Shirley and her sister, Norma, were not as excited about going to the games. One time, they stood under a tree that they thought gave them allergies so that they could stay home and not go to the baseball games! They were very creative and funny!!
Yikes! Rashes! “Oh well, Dad, can’t go to the game with a rash!”, said Grandma Shirley!
Every Saturday morning, the children in the family hurried to get their work finished so they could listen to the | When Grandma Shirley was a little girl, everyone loved listening to the radio (there was no television until she was 17 years old).
radio programs called Shadow, Ozzie and Harriet, and Blondie and Dagwood. The Clegg children had so much fun using their imagination as they listened to the radio.
Grandma Shirley was a big tease! She loved to tease Norma about the “needle bugs” that flew around during the summer evenings. She told her sister that those bugs would sew her mouth shut! Grandma Shirley was very creative and funny! | Does that look like a needle? I am sure that Grandma Shirley and her sister had a lot of fun teasing each other.
When Grandma Shirley was growing up, there were no washing machines or dryers to do the laundry. The clothes were hand washed, put through a wringer, then rinse tub, and finally hung on the line to dry. Grandma had to do the wash before she went to school. | This wringer machine would squeeze out a lot of the water from the clothes so that the clothes would dry quicker on the line.
Grandma Shirley loved fishing, dogs, airplanes and talking on the phone. She loved Christmas and always had a real white flocked tree. Christmas was full of love and surprises for everyone.
Grandma Shirley had a testimony of the true church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was very proud that Jan and Randy were married in the temple. | She loved and supported them even though she could not attend the temple. Isn’t this a beautiful temple? All temples are so beautiful inside and outside. I know that you will all want to go to the temple someday.
Grandma became very sick. Her first thought was for her grandchildren. She wanted to attend all of their events. She had a big desire to live for her children and grandchildren.
Grandma Shirley loved Grandpa Wally and her children, Jan and Lynn. She loved the children that married into her family, Randy and Laurie. Grandma Shirley loved her grandchildren, Amy, Adam, Aly, Nick, Carol, Amber, and Ryan. She would do anything for her family.
It breaks my heart that Grandma Shirley could not stay to see on earth her wonderful new grandchildren who married into her family (Bob, Kathryn, Shawn, and Kelly) and her angel great grandchildren (Camden, McKay, Naomi, Elsa, Bailee, Jordan, Logan, Hayden, and Eldon). She would have loved you all so much! I know that she loves us from heaven and is our special ministering angel from above. | I know that we have a loving Heavenly Father, and a beautiful plan of salvation. We will all be together again some day because of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
I know that Grandma Shirley is in Heaven learning and growing in her testimony. I know that she continues to be an example of love and light for each of us.
The life of Grandma Shirley is summed up by the phrase, “You first loved them.” She loved and loved and loved. She was always giving of herself and her resources. Her legacy is one of love of family and friends. There was never a doubt in any child or grandchild's mind that Grandma Shirley loved them. What an honor it is to have such a beautiful woman as a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother . I know that from Heaven she loves every one of you, her sweet great-grandchildren with sheer delight and pure love! Grandma Shirley was love and light!
