FC: Destination Brazil ~ July 30 - August 8, 2011 Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center Mission Trip
On our way... 9 hour flight from Orlando to Sao Paulo and then another 3 hours to Fortalezza. | Once we arrived, our 45 bags had to be piled and bungeed onto 2 small trucks and we rode in a small van to our hotel.
 Our hotel in Fortaleza
We never did find out what this thing out in the ocean was...
Above, breakfast buffet every morning on the 22nd floor. The pool on the roof was not very appealing. Right, me walking on Alex's sore back. Below, the hotel lobby.
Left: How many people can you fit in an elevator... or a cab? Right: After trying for 2 days to get some hot water, I was advised to turn the knob on top of the shower head. While standing on the toilet, I broke the shower head right off the wall. Linda was not pleased with me at all!
On left page: before and after pictures of the playground. Top: unpacking 24 suitcases of donated clothes and school supplies. Right: all suitcases had to be brought upstairs! Bottom right: preparing to give the 800 bags of school supplies to the kids and teachers.
Before and after pics of painting at the school.
Top left: finishing up the painting in a classroom. Top right: some of our donations went to new soccer balls for the PE class. Left: the children made each of us a poster thanking us for coming to their school. Bottom: kids at the school and Luz, me, and Linda goofing off.
Top left: some soccer downtime for us. A scared kitten I rescued from the excited children. Top right: our lunch break in the teacher's lounge. Right: our mission team at the school. Bottom left: jump-roping with the kids. Luz having some frozen yogurt. Bottom right: our "friendly" guards.
Visiting a favella (slum) where the people live in horrible, unsanitary conditions. It was very sad to see that these caring , friendly people have to live this way.
Our medical team treated over 1500 patients in 5 days at various locations in Forteleza. Most aliments were aches, infections and intestinal parasites. Our team donated their medical equipment and supplies to the local hospital after our work week was complete. We also supplied reading glasses to the people who needed them which were donated by FHMMC staff.
Various animals we saw wander-ing around town.
This statue in the beach of Iracema is known as "Iracema, Guardi" (Iracema, the Guardian), and is from 1996. The Indian is holding a large bow, as if ready for a battle.
On our dinners out, we were a little leery of what we would eat. We tried (and liked) a few new foods (top left: yuka). We found a few familiar places: McDonalds and Subway. Coca Zero and Coca Regularo were nice reminders of home.
Local park that we visited on Saturday after church. We saw large lizards and sagui monkeys playing in the trees.
Our Sunday Fun Day was spent riding dune buggies.
Some of the stops on our dune buggy excursion included sand sliding, zip-lining, a slide and banana boat ride.
A few more favorite photos. Left page: our team at the Adventist church, some shopping pics from the Mercado, Linda and I in a cab. This page: me and our hot bus driver, the really big bottles of water they served everywhere, and Linda and I blogging every night.
