Throughout his journey Bud has quite an adventure and ends up back with his family without realizing it at first.

April 21, 1932 I am 6 years old and my momma has just died. I'm being sent to something called a "Home" and I have no idea what that is. Well, write in you later.

March 13, 1936 I am so scared! I got temporarily placed in a care home with a twelve year old boy. He's older than me and he's probably gonna want to fight. I don't want to fight. Shoot. One other boy got placed in a home with three little girls. They're probably going to treat him like some kind of bet. Well, good night.

March 15, 1936 I got woken up bu Todd, the older boy at my care home, in the middle of the night. He shoved a pencil up my nose. Then he started hitting me like a punching bag. Finally he got me in trouble and now I have to spend the rest of the night in the shed. It has a blood stain on the floor, spiders, rats, mice, it is very dark and now I'm locked in. Good night, maybe forever.

March 16, 1936 Well, after a terrifying night, I managed to escape the shed and got my suitcase before leaving. I also got revenge on Todd by making him wet the bed, which his mother hates. Now I'm on the lam.

March 17, 1936 I spent the night under the Christmas trees by the library and woke up late to go eat breakfast at the Mission. I ran to the mission and the man at the end of the line gave me a real hard time. Then a real big man grabbed holt of my neck and told me to go back to my "family" who were just pretending to be my family. I saw a billboard with a rich white family in a big car. Shoot, it looked like they had just ate a big ol' chocolate chip cookie. The family, who had saved me from the man at the end of the line, let me eat breakfast with them, told me not to be late for dinner and sent me on my way. I'm off alone... again.

March 17, 1936 I went to the library and looked for the librarian, Miss Hill and I found out that she is married and she moved away. I wish she hadn't moved away, I liked her. I know this is a short entry but this is all I've got since the Mission.

March 19, 1936 Man a lot of things have happened in the past few days. I found bugs... or more like bugs found me. I found Hooverville, met Deza Malone, got my first kiss, | missed a train, went back to the library, found out how long it would take to get to Grand Rapids to find my father and now to get some sleep. Tomorrow I head off to Grand Rapids.

March 21, 1936 On my way to Grand Rapids, a man driving a Sedan actually stopped for me and offered a baloney and mustard sandwich with red pop. Shucks, how did he know that I was so hungry? He was going to drive me back home | but, in his car there were boxes of human blood. Shoot, I thought he was a vampire. So, before he got in the truck I put in gear and took off, but I didn't get far. The man caught up to me when I stopped and said that he was a doctor. So, | now I'm riding in the Sedan.

March 22, 1936 I found my dad's band at the Log Cabin in Grand Rapids and I approached them. Shucks, my dad shaved his head! He didn't recognize me and he was kinda | mean. We talked about how he ain't my daddy and that I went in there accusing men to be my daddy. Now they're going to take me to the Sweet Pea for dinner.

April 1, 1936 Today I made a shocking discovery. Herman E. Caloway is my grandfather! He has rocks just like mine, with abbreviations, numbers, and dots, and his daughter's name was my mom's name! I'm not sure if I want him to be my grand dad or not.
