37: www.clpottery.com | Courtney Moulder | I began taking ceramic classes just less than two years ago, and I had almost no prior experience with clay. I love being able to create art, both functional and aesthetic, out of something as simple as mud. I like being able to form something so solid and lasting out of something that is right beneath our feet. Clay is a beautiful medium to work with because it is natural and earthy. I can be completely relaxed while working in my medium because I become so absorbed and focused. It's a great time to collect my thoughts and just make art. One of my favorite things about working with clay is the coolness on my hands. Clay is a tricky medium to work with. You can't let yourself get too attached to a piece because ceramics are so vulnerable and fragile. I've enjoyed being able to observe my unmistakable progress over this short amount of time working with clay. It gives me hope for growth and improvement in the future. I'm always looking to improve my work. If I'm not honing my skills and developing my personal style, then I am not working hard enough. My work in this book is a series inspired by the human body. They are organic, figurative forms that are my own interpretations of different body parts. I plan to continue human body representations, along with my functional pottery, in future work.
