56: the war the South almost won... This week, Ben and some of the boys on the block decided to play "Civil War". As it turns out, Ben is the only boy on the block without his own cap gun, {BELIEVE ME, we've heard about it!!} so he had to wield a badminton racket for the war. {Fear not, he upgraded to two tennis rackets before it was over!} At first, the bigger boys wanted to be "the South". Ben, however, had the best fake southern accent, and it was decided that he was therefore more convincing in the role. {And the bigger boys came to remember that "the North" was victorious in the actual Civil War and thought that might give them an advantage in their summer game.} Battle broke out.The North took position, next to the house the little neighborhood girls were loitering at.The South charged and the North retreated. Suddenly, the North had the South on the run.Ben had the high ground advantage momentarily ...then the South, led by the ninja sword swinging five year old, chased the North into a backyard. Things seemed to be going well for the south, until they made the slight tactical error of hunkering down in the square foot garden. Things just didn't seem to go their way from then on. Little sisters distracted me momentarily, and when I went back to check the status of the war, the North had surrendered! {Until they jumped up and ran off yelling, "JUST KIDDING!" Such a bummer when that happens!} In the end, the war was called on account of a storm blowing in. Promises of a rematch still stand. Lazy summer afternoons are the BEST!!! {And-- don't be too disappointed Ben! It was close the whole afternoon, and just think-- now you can be more in tune with your Southern ancestry!}

73: Gracie Goo, you come in two forms: pure joy and pure TROUBLE. There isn't much middle ground with you. You know what makes you happy {blueberry yogurt and Scooby Doo, currently} and what doesn't {the rest of the world} and you are not afraid to own it. Listen, little girlfriend, for as much trouble as you give me, I adore being your mother. I love watching you go through your day with your spunky little attitude. You may be the baby of the family, but you have no idea. You are in charge here and we all know it. You have us with your deep, raspy baby voice and impish grin. We're smitten. {Secretly, I admire how determined you are. I love that you know what you want and what you don't. I will tell you this, Miss Goo, there isn't a time when I dislike myself more than when I find myself in a situation doing something I don't really want to be doing-- because I have a fear of telling people no, a desire to make everyone happy. Something tells me this isn't a problem you are going to have.} I love you. ALL of you. Even the trouble. You do it so nicely.

The rest of our December was spent driving back and forth to Price and Ryan handling the funeral details. | It was such a sad end to the year. Ryan was incredibly impressive in how he handled the overwhelming responsibilities of all of the matters surrounding this event.
