S: Exploring with Little Garrett
BC: THIRD BIRTHDAY CHAIN FOR GARRETT Observing you discover the jump, you restore my gravity body before it could free itself from the ground. Your first in the air, eye glittering, cocked in delight at your sparrow hop. You click a ballpoint pen at the TV, eager, head ahead. But nothing. You droop your wings and pick at the threads of your shredded wheat. Fledgling, you will fly. You will fly. With grace you place the mask of the nebulizer over your nose and mouth, and breathe as though the world is so arranged, and now to the checklist. O my smallest astronaut. Above, from the top of the slide you look down at me. Fingers of an oak caress the twilight sky behind you, half-moon beyond, brighter than reason to be. You look down and say, “I’m happy.” Your favorite picture show is you. The camera clicks at you, and you want to see the “back” with the token moment of you that shows, if you weren’t you, how you’d look to you. with love, papa
