FC: Fallen Angels and the Monomyth by Michael Simpson

The Call to Adventure This happens when Perry's medical profile doesn't get processed right and he is sent to Vietnam anyway. Perry said "The only reason I was going anyway was because of a paperwork mess up." (Myers 5)

Refusal of The Call The refusal of the call happens when Perry tells himself that all the fighting is all ready over and it'll be real easy going for him. Perry said "From what I had heard, the fighting was almost over, anyway." (Myers 5)

Supernatural Aid Perry's supernatural aid is his friend Peewee. They form a bond between each other to protect each other and watch out for them. They spit on their hands and exchange high fives, this is how Perry describes it, "He spit on his hand and held it up. I spit on mine and we exchanged fives. It felt good." (Myers 24)

Crossing the First Threshold Perry crosses the first threshold when Perry and his squad go on their first patrol. Perry said "For the first ten minutes I had to wipe my right hand on my fatigues at least a dozen times." (Myers 39)

The Belly Of The Whale Perry enters the belly of the whale and realizes it when Jenkins gets unexpectedly blown up by a land mine after they get back from their first outing. Perry describes Jenkins in his last moments on page 41 "Jenkins' face was white and twisted as he struggled to look down at his wound." (Myers 41)

The Road Of Trials Perry comes across a lot of challenges he must overcome during his time in Vietnam, but the one that sorta got him "started" was when his squad killed their first cong. Perry saw the cong and realized he was no bigger than his brother Kenny it was here where i feel like Perry began to feel the real sense of war and how bad it is. Perry said "We had gone out into the jungle and seen one VC and killed him. Then we came back in time for lunch." (Myers 81)

Meeting With The Goddess Perry's "goddess is his mom. Perry and his mom talk back and forth, but they have a very off and on relationship between each other. Perry's mom had even written to Peewee to say that she loved Perry. Perry describes his relationship with his mom as "a small war" (Myers 143). I think that Perry's off and on relationship with his mom helps him become stronger in war and the war also helps him to get closer to his mom.

Temptation From The True Path The temptation from the true path for Perry is his Mom and Kenny. Perry hears news about violence and racial related beatings/killings and he starts to worry about his family. He said that "Kenny was all Mama had left. She had me in a way but not in any real way." (Myers 153)

Atonment with the father At this stage of the book and in Perry's adventure, he realizes that he is just like everyone else in this war with him. Before this Perry hadn't killed a man and he thought and felt it was wrong to. He looked to people who went out and just killed the enemy ruthlessly like Monaco as worse people. Now he has joined in and become one of them they're all in the same boat together. Perry is overwhelmed when he kills his first man, "I turned away. I vomited." (Myers 181)

Apotheosis Perry reaches apotheosis and becomes "godlike" when he and Peewee break away from the rest of their squad and find their way back to the LZ. Perry realizes that he is a soldier. He says "Who the hell were these people? These soldiers? Was I really one of them?" (Myers 296)

Refusal of The Return Perry never really flatly denies going back home but you can tell in the text that he feels like he is leaving his squad behind. I think he feels like it unfair of him to leave when Monaco has essentially been through the same experience as Perry and Peewee. He came just as close if not closer to death than Perry. Perry said "Monaco was like me and Peewee. We had tasted what it felt like being dead." (Myers 304)

Master of Two worlds When Perry gets back he is a master of two worlds. He experienced war and felt all of the emotions that come with it. He has experienced all of the hardships of war so the hardships of regular day to day life seem less difficult. Petty complaints seem ridiculous to him. Perry realized he was heading back to the "real world" when "A fat man complained that they didn't have the wine he wanted." (Myers 309)
