Sarah May (Bessie) Hartree | This is the story of Sarah May who hated her name and preferred to be called Bessie and later Bet. Bessie was born on the 17th July 1888 at Fassifern, NSW in a tent. In this photo she is 16 years old (1904).

Bessie's parents were Henry and Dora Hartree and they immigrated to Australia from Porteshead, England on the "Petersborough" in 1882. They moved to Newcastle so that Henry could find work as a carpenter and in 1900 had saved enough money to buy a home in Brunker Road, Adamstown (Newcastle) where they raised their family. They had eight children, four sons and four daughters. Ethel (1878), John (1880), Gilbert (1882), Edmund (1883), Minna (1885), Sarah May (1888), Winifred Dora (1892) and Harry (1894).

The family home at 79 Brunker Road, Adamstown with the family store next door.

Bessie Hartree | Frank Bamford | Bessie's brother Harry | Bessie's sister Winnie | Bessie met Frank in 1911 and they would go on picnics with friends and family on the Hunter River.

Frank Bamford asked Bessie to marry him before he joined up for the war in 1914.

Bessie became a waitress at "The Ferns" in Springwood, Blue Mountains - she didn't like this much so she returned home and became a psychiatric nurse at Stockton Hospital in Newcastle.
