26: After dinner and show, we return to our room around 10:30 p.m. Steve turns on the tv and we see that their has been an 8.9 earthquake off the coast of Japan. This caused a devastating tsunami. Now the tsunami was headed towards Hawaii and would hit where we were in Kauai around 3:00 a.m. We were originally to stay overnight at Kauai's harbor (Nawiliwili). Within minutes, the harbor came alive with workers unstacking the storage containers on the dock. Tsunami sirens were wailing! They were announcing over the ships intercom that we were going to set sail around 1:00 a.m. because it would be safer for us to be out at sea. The emotions that I felt were terrifying. Just knowing this tsunami would be traveling as fast as a jet beneath us. Not knowing if there would be a dock to return to. No one slept well that night. I finally fell slept from 4:30 - 6:30 a.m. It is now 3/11/2011 our Day 13. The harbor stayed closed because of aftershocks until 11:00 a.m. We had a leisure morning. The mood on the ship was somber. There were many Japanese tourist on board. Many other boats dotted the water all waiting for the harbor to reopen. Once we got back in to the dock, there was evidence of clean up of sand and debris but we did not see any real damage. (left) Later that afternoon, we sailed to the other side of the island of Kauai to the Na Pali Coast. Breathtaking views. (right) In the morning, we will arrive back in Honolulu. What an amazing vacation!
29: Day 14 3/12/2011 Our cruise ends early morning. We have all day to spend on Oahu before our plane takes off at 9:55 p.m. Cheeseburger in Paradise, Aloha tower, last Hawaii picture and sunset.
