FC: Ira Hayes Hall of fame
1: He was from Arizona and joined Marine Corps and fought in Iwo Jima and Bougainville Campaign Served from 1942-1945
2: He earned many awards in the Marines, like WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Service Medal, Basic Parachutist Wings, just to name a few.
3: He fought in Iwo Jima and survived and was one of the flag raisers.
4: The picture left shows where Ira was helping raising the flag | The picture right is when the marines conquered Iwo Jima and rose the flag.
5: Ira survived Iwo Jima and was sent home from the army and took place in the 7th Bond Tour to promote the war.
6: Kicking off the Bond Tour May 1945: Times Square The mayor watches Hayes, Gagnon and Bradley raise the flag 55ft high. 1.4 million New Yorkers showed up
7: The Original Flag that flew over Mt. Suribachi. Gagnon, Bradley and Hayes are in picture. This flag is now in the Marine Corps Museum, Washington, D.C
8: President Truman greeting the flag-raiser survivors. | The 7th Bond tour raised 24 billion( 1945 dollars) for the U.S treasury and this was the most they raised out of all the bond tours.
9: The memorial is located in Washington D.C outside the walls of Arlington National Cemetery. | The memorial was donated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in November 1954.
10: Died On January 24, 1955 He drank himself to death and died at age 32 He received the largest state funeral in Arizona
11: He is buried in Arlington Cemetery with a full military honors
