FC: Precedents established by Jefferson | 1801

1: precedent #1 Barbary Pirates | Washington and Adams had established the policy of paying bribes to the Barbary States. When Jefferson took office he refused to pay the increase of the bribe. He sent ships to blockade the Barbary states and attempted the first covert operation. At the conclusion of this confrontation he realized that he needed a navy. | - Megan Carlyle -

4: Precedent #2 In 1801 Jefferson learned that Spain had agreed to return Louisiana back to France. In 1803 Jefferson sent Livingston and Monroe to negotiate with Napoleon to secure access to the Mississippi River which was vital to our economy. | How much

5: Livingston and Monroe would buy the territory which would double the size of the United States | 15 million

6: Jefferson believed in a strict interpretation of the Constitution . In 1803, the senate approved the Louisiana Purchase Treaty. This established precedent because new territory was acquired without war or conquest.

7: Jefferson hired Lewis and Clark to explore the new area. In 2 1/2 years the men would explore 8,000 miles .
