Ding! Ding! Ding! Rang the bell. "Hello students, welcome to your first day of school as my new third graders," said Ms. Penelope, "I'm excited for another school year. This year we are going to learn so much and work extra hard. So make sure you sit next to a buddy who is here to learn."
Jeffery, a student of Ms. Penelope's, ran home and couldn't wait to tell his mom about third grade. He mentioned that this year each student was to work hard and sit with a friend who's going to work hard too. Jeffery never had a lot of friends so he thought if he dressed in a buttoned up shirt, sweater vest and glasses the class would think he's smart and everyone would want to sit with him.
As students started showing up to class, Jeffery was nervously waiting in his seat to see what everyone would think of his new look. He was hoping all the students would want to sit next to him because he looked smart and that's exactly what happened.
Everyday students fought to sit next to Jeffery. One student caught his eye, her name was Cecelia. She was the only student in Ms. Penelope's class that wasn't forcing her way to sit in the seat next to Jeffery.
A week went by and Jeffery had the reputation of being the coolest and smartest kid in class. Some kids were even trying to dress like him.
One day after recess was over, Ms. Penelope's students took their seats and she announced to everyone that there was going to be a test the next day. Before anyone had the chance to ask Jeffery if he would sit with them during the test, he had made his way to Cecelia to ask her to share a desk with him.
Cecelia was thrilled to be sitting with the smartest kid in class. Ms. Penelope passed the tests out and gave them permission to begin. As she turned back around, she was shocked at what she saw. Jeffery was cheating from Cecelia's test.
Ms. Penelope took Jeffery by his arm and scolded him in front of the entire class. He was so embarrassed. None of the students wanted to sit next him because they realized even though he dressed like he was smart, he didn't know more than the average student did.
Jeffery learned a valuable lesson that day that will stay with him forever. The lesson was to be who you are and not try to be something that you're not. He now has tons of new friends who accept him for who he is and doesn't have to try to impress his classmates anymore.
