1: Riding Off | Deep | Deep is Will's horse who he rides off with to start his adult life. | Deep is a blue roan quarter horse. Quarter horses are bred to run a quarter mile race. They have excellent build and their bodies are strong and powerful on the sprint. They usually have a calm temperament. their ability to launch out of the starting block is beneficial when cutting cattle because they can change direction fast and keep their speed.
3: This is a pronghorn. Will sees one as he races away from his home. He chases after it to get a better look at it. It is because of this that he doesn't notice Denny is following him until the antelope spooks. Causing Will to wonder why he spooked. At which point will turns around and sees Denny coming.
4: Prairie Rattlesnake | The Prairie Rattlesnake is a venomous snake that is very dangerous, in that it is very hard to see in its native area. Will comes across one when he is with Denny. | Will is about to get his rifle when Denny tells him he will move the snake.
5: Will agrees, but says to do it with a stick. Will stands with his rifle at the ready.When Denny attempts to move the snake, it starts to move forward. Will fires. The snake falls dead in its tracks. Before Will can stop him Denny reaches to roll over the snake and it bites him. Will proceeds to use the suck and spit method that is supposed to get out the venom.
6: This would have been the style of rifle that Will would have had. It is a .22 caliber 1906 winchester rifle. His would be a few models later but generally the same style.
7: Canteen | When Will is done with fixing the wound, he ties the two front legs of Denny's horse together so that it can't go far. He then rides off. He rides for a while then sees Denny riding towards him. He stops and skins the snake cooking some of the meat on a fire. Quickly, he sticks the skin on a belt for Denny. When Denny gets there Will accidentally knocks over his canteen. In order to save the water in his canteen he tosses the belt to his brother, singlehandedly scaring him. | This canteen would hold a day's water. Losing it could mean death from dehydration.
8: One Last Try | Three is the cantle of the saddle, the place where the second present would go. | When Denny still wants to go with Will after the first present, Will, in a last ditch effort, gives Denny a second present. This present is a cantle of the saddle with snakeskin on it.
9: When Denny sees the possibilities of the great reapings he will get from these presents he is very tempted to go home. Eventually, he insists on following. Will thinks that the flooded river that he has to cross will stop Denny. So he goes down the canyon walls to the river. It starts raining, and then hail falls. The ride down the walls gets rough. Then Will hears the neigh of Denny's horse. . . | The Canyon
