A retelling of the story Aviator By Melanie Knott. Mr. Yost's Class, Period 2.
This story begins in 1918 at a U.S. flying school. Edgar, a flight instructor, gives a failed lesson to a young pilot in training, in which the young pilot dies.
About ten years later, Edgar is asked to take another passenger. Though reluctant due to his last experience, he accepts the request. Throughout the flight, Tillie annoys and pesters Edgar with her questions.
As Edgar's annoyance for the young girl grows, he decides to take a short cut over the Rocky Mountains, in order to avoid any unnecessary time spent with her. However, the plain crashes during this short cut, on a inhabited part of the mountains.
Edgar soon realizes that while at a pit stop, a mechanic hadn't sealed the gas tank shut, and the plane had lost fuel, causing the plane to crash unexpectedly. As Tillie and Edgar try to find there location, Tillie continues to annoy Edgar by blaming him for the crash.
As the night goes on, Tillie tries to ease calm herself down by having a cigarette. However, as she goes to throw it away, she throws it at the plane, causing whats left of the aviator to be destroyed. Edgar is soon forced to accept the hopelessness of their survival, and tries to take control of the situation and salvage any resources he can.
The next day, Edgar goes on a walk, trying to find some kind of nutrition for them. | As he is searching, he stubbles upon a rabbit, and uses his only tool left, a pistol, to shoot the rabbit. As he heads back to camp, he is attacked by a small pack of wolves, who take the rabbit, and in doing so badly wound his arm. When he returns to camp, Tillie bandages him up.
Now faced with the tragic reality of being left with no food, the danger of the wolves, and no materials from the plane, they realize their only chance of survival is to try to scale down the mountain. The realize their best chance is to head down the mountain towards the canyon below them.
As Edgar and Tillie make their way down the mountains, a search plane is spotted overhead. Assuming this is their only hope, Tillie tries to jump onto a small ledge in order to signal the plain. However in doing so, she breaks her leg.
That night, Edgar and Tillie are forced to spend the night on the cliff. As the night gets darker, the two become aware of the situation they are in, and of the bond they know share. Over the night, this bond turns into a mutual respect and affection for eachother.
The next morning, as Edgar and Tillie make their way to the bottom of the cliff, Tillie spots telephone wires, a sure sign of civilization. Edgar tries to get a look around and is attacked by another wolf.
Tillie, who now has a hold of the pistol, shoots the wolf | before he can cause any harm towards Edgar. As the two recover, the same rescue plane from before circles overhead, and spots the two. It lands in time to pick them up and bring them back to civilization, where their wounds will be treated, and they will be safe at last.
As this story comes to an end, we are left with the desire that the bond and love that these two strangers formed for each other, turns into something much more real. | The End
