FC: Mikayla 4th grade 2010-2011
Mikayla-4th grade | Mikayla, August 2010 You will be starting fourth grade this year. The start of the year might be hard on you. Last year the school board decided to turn Forest View Elementary into a k-3 building and Forest Lake Elementary would then house the 4th through 6th graders. So, you had to say good bye to Forest View (and being in the same building as Caleb) and move across the street to forest Lake Elementary. I know you will make new friends and adjust, but none-the-less it will be a transition. This is the year you will turn ten years old. The year you will go "double digits" and be allowed to get your ears pierced. I can't wait to do that with you. I have special things planned. You continue to play the piano and do well, although you tend to complain about the practicing. You joined the worship team at church and we are considering sending you to AWANA at a church here in forest Lake. I love you my sweet girl. I love you for your kindness to others. I love the way you are careful with your money. I love your commitment to reading your devotion each night. I even love watching you become more independent (although it is so very hard for me sometimes!) There were a few times we left you at home alone this summer while Dad and I ran out with the other kids. It was so weird without you and, of course, I worried about you at home. Of course you were fine and you even seemed to enjoy the time alone. You spent it reading...your favorite hobby right now. I look forward to your 4th grade year and watching you grow and learn. I love being your mom! I love you! Love, Love, Mom
The start of 4th grade! September 2010
This year you changed schools. You now attend Forest Lake Elementary with 4th-6th graders. The change was difficult at first, but you eventually grew to like it. | Mrs. Kibbel was your teacher.
September 2010 almost 10 years old
On October 1, 2010 Ola and I surprised you at school. We were picking you up to take you out to lunch and get your ears pierced! This was our (mine and dad's) gift to you for your birthday. We did it early because I wanted to take Ola with us and she was going to be in Florida on the 13th. We gave you your choice of restaurants and you picked Culvers. During lunch we told you our next stop would be to get your ears pierced. After that you didn't eat anything else. I think you were just too excited. We ended up going to Claire's in Maplewood Mall to get your ears pierced. It was so fun and you were so brave. Bill for ear piercing: $40.00
For your birthday party this year you had 7 friends over. We made bandanna necklaces, ate lunch (tacos per your request) and then had cake (a horse) and ice cream. It was lots of fun!
 Indy | Kate | Erin | Autumn | Kelley | Madison | Megan
This was the first year you were able to hunt. Your license was free! You and Dad spent a few different mornings and evenings hunting out of a tree in Laska's yard. Although you didn't shoot anything (or even see any deer) you enjoyed your time outside!
For Halloween this year you were Laura Ingalls Wilder. This costume was given to you by Indy Walstrom for your birthday and you absolutely loved it! For trick or treating you, dad, and the boys went to a church in Forest Lake. I stayed home with your new sister.
Yes, you and your brother fight sometimes, but as a general rule you enjoy playing together. I am so thankful you guys love each other! 11-3-10 10 and 7 years old
Sisters! | 10 years old and five days old
The snow fell gently all the night. It made a blanket soft and white. It covered houses, flowers and ground but did not make a single sound. | Erin Collins | December 4, 2010
You had a good time playing in the snow. 10 years old.
For your annual date with your dad you went to see a Christmas play/musical at North Heights. The weather on the night of your date was horrendous! The event should have been canceled, but wasn't. Although 1,000 tickets were sold for the event only about 100 people showed up! After the play you and Dad went out to eat at Paninos. When you were about 1/2 mile from home you got stuck in the snow, so you and Dad had to walk home. Luckily we packed your warm clothes. The snow was coming down like crazy! Dad had to go back to the Honda and dig it out with the skid steer!
January 2011 You started to complain about not being able to see the board at school so we took you to the eye doctor and sure enough, you needed glasses! We think you look very smart. You were very excited about your new look as well!
February 2011 This was your first year in AWANA and your first derby race. You decided you wanted a car that looked like corn on the cob. So you and Dad worked on it. When you were done we thought you had a pretty good chance of winning a trophy for design and were just thrilled when you won a trophy for both design and speed!
The weather was beautiful so we had the egg hunt outside. You found the egg with the money and the bunny for the second year in a row! Yea for you! | Easter 2011 10 1/2 years old
We enrolled you in AWANA for the first time this year at a local church in Forest Lake. For the first 3/4 of a year you worked on the required workbook very little, but then we kicked it into high gear! In the final two months of the program you memorized your scripture verses like crazy and did all the written work. So, by the end of the year you finished your book and received many awards! Hooray for you!! You really seemed to enjoy this program and we hope you join again next year! 4/27/11 10 1/2 years old.
4-28-11 Each year your school puts on an evening called Arts and Academics where students can show off their school work or do something artistic. Although this is completely optional, you decided you wanted to play the piano. You and your piano teacher picked out a piece for you to play (The Spider Dance). You practiced a lot and you did a fantastic job. You said you were really nervous, but I never would have known! I am so proud of you!
June 2, 2011 This was the first really nice summer day. You enjoyed getting back into a swim suit and playing in the water! 10 1/2 years old
June 5, 2011 Oh, what an exciting day! Today was the day the chickens were taken out of the recycle bin and put in the coop! We got the chicks from Bonnie who hatched them in her classroom as a part of a science unit. We initially took ten, but gave five away (we hope we gave away all the roosters!) Then Darby spent many hours building the coop. We hope to get eggs by the fall! You enjoyed getting the chicks into their new home, but it was a bit anti-climatic as the chickens didn't seem to be as excited as us!
The last day of fourth grade! June 8, 2011
June 2011 I enrolled you in swimming lessons at the beginning of the summer. You were in level six. Amongst other things you needed to swim 350 yards (14 laps), tread water for five minutes, and retrieve a brick off the bottom of the pool to pass the class. I was nervous about you passing, but you did! Hooray for you! You are a fabulous swimmer! 10 1/2 years old
June 24, 2011 Walking along the St. Croix River in STillwater. You loved it!
The Teddy Bear Park in Stillwater. What a little monkey. June 24, 2011 (10 1/2 years old)
June 25, 2011 Our family participated in a Walk for Life in Forest Lake this summer. After the walk "the reptile guy" put on a show. You were brave enough to hold a snake! How scary!
4th of July 2011 Ola wanted to sell these kid skis, but before she did she asked you if you wanted to learn to ski. When you said yes, she decided to keep them. I thought it would take you a ton of practice to get up, but you proved me wrong! I was so proud of you when you got up and skied after only a handful of tries! You were awesome! | Getting your skis on was hard! | Ola helped you get a feel for how it was supposed to feel. | Papa pulled the rope tight. | You are almost there! | Will you stay up?
Look how happy you and Ola are!! | Hoooray!!!
Ah, strawberry shortcake at the cabin over the fourth of July! 10 1/2 years old
You went to Trout Lake Camp with all of these girls. But before you left we had a "send off party." I made each girl a back with "TLC" and their initial on it and then filled the bag with water, a snack, and a lantern. Each girl also decorated their own tank top. 7-19-11 Left to right: Mikayla, Erin Collins, Rachel Tornio, Kennedy Messenbring, Mariah Friesen, and Emily Tornio
Mark 1:4 "...he was in the wilderness and preached that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven."
You were baptized in Lake Johanna on the shores of Northwestern College with Caleb and Dad on July 10, 2011. We were so proud of your decision.
Bunker Beach August 5, 2011 It was really hot when we went to Bunker Beach. Of course, this made it even more fun! You had a great time swimming and going down the slides. I think you decided your favorite part was the wave pool. (It's too bad I didn't get any pictures of you in it!)
Duluth 8-26-11 You loved Duluth and spending time by the water.
You spent a good portion of your summer swimming with Indy in their pool. August 2011
As has been our custom we went to Trout Lake Camp over Labor Day Weekend. It was great weather and we had a good time. | This year you decided to do the zip line at The Point. You didn't seem scared at all. I was very proud of you!
Rock Climbing at camp is always at the top of the list of things to do. You made it to the top this year. What a great job.
The carnival was a lot of fun again this year. Somehow you and Mariah Friesen got a front seat on the only ride at this carnival. You had to wear glasses due to all the dust that would get kicked up.
The Leap of Faith | When you told us you wanted to do the Leap of Faith I almost croaked. You were so incredibly brave. Oh, I was so proud when you just scooted up that telephone pole and stood on top of it. You stood for only a short time before you jumped. You missed the trapeze, but who cares??? You jumped. You were brave. You were awesome.
Camp always ends with launching rockets. Although it was only Dad, Josiah, and Caleb who made the rockets you helped launch them. The rockets were well made and flew quite a distance. Afterward you and Caleb ran to retrieve them.
Summers end! | I love you Mikayla. Good luck in 5th grade. September 2011
