1: I am a Military Brat | Brothers and sisters together who belong to the great family of military brats do so because of their common experiences, and real sense and spirit of place. There are no special markings or passwords to identify each other. It is a unique and special bond. We are a separate and distinct breed. | I was born in one place. I have lived in several other places. I lived the longest in yet another place. As a child I thought every place was the best place until I got to the next place. I am from all the places I have lived. I feel privileged and enriched by my transient past. I have friends throughout the country and around the world. | Because of the military life, I am a stranger everywhere and a stranger nowhere. I can engage anyone in a conversation, become well liked in seconds, and yet there is a distance I can never recover. A slight shiver of alienation, of not belonging, and an eye on the nearest door. The word goodbye will always be a killing thing to me, but so will the word hello. (Pat Conroy) | There is no doubt the military culture in which we lived significantly influenced our young lives through instilling high values, national pride and patriotism and a healthy respect for democracy. We learned to make difficult choices, take advantage of unique opportunities, and experience more of life. We worked side-by-side for the betterment of our community. We had invigorating spirit for life. Our military lifestyle legacy reveals we are different and special. I wear with pride the label MILITARY BRAT
