FC: NAAMKARAN Hindu Baby Naming Ceremony

NAAMKARAN Hindu Baby Naming Ceremony by Natalie Post

Naamkaran, or naming of the child, is the first ceremony held for the newborn child. This special ceremony usually takes place when the baby is 12 days old. Hindus believe to be able to bestow the baby with a good life the naming ceremony must be done with the proper rituals.

First the mother and baby take a ritual bath to become "pure". The mother then takes a piece of new cloth and wraps the baby up to be placed in the lap of the father.

The father will lean in and whisper the name of the baby into the baby's ear after the priest offers prayers and the baby is blessed.

The baby is placed in a jhula, which is a cradle. It is decorated with colorful flowers and ribbons. The women gather around and sing songs and dance around the jhula.

The aunt of the baby, the father's sister, whispers the baby's name into the baby's ear and then the name is announced to everyone.

Everyone there then takes turns coming up to the cradle and rocks the baby.

Sometimes this ceremony takes place later than 12 days after the baby is born. When this happens the baby must then wait until it is 101 days old to receive the ceremony. They also do not get placed in the jhula. Instead, the baby is placed in a red or green cloth which is held by the aunts (again the sisters of the father). The aunts then gently swing the bay in the cloth, imitating the movement of a cradle.

Apart of the ceremony also includes gifts. For a Naamkaran ceremony traditional gifts include; gold chains, earrings, sliver anklets, gold and sliver ornaments, and new clothes. Sometimes special statutes are given too.

After the naming ritual is complete. Family and friends then bless the baby by touching honey or sugar to the baby's lips. It is a special and happy time for the family.

The celebration concludes with a meal for everyone who has come to the ceremony.

Every culture has different ways to choose a name for children. Choosing a name for a baby is very important and the rituals and ceremonies are a big part of the customs for Hindus.
