BC: Courtney Cheuvront is a junior at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida pursuing her degree in Elementary Education. She has been teaching gymnastics since high school. | About the Author

1: To Olivia and Amanda Conti. Much Love, Courtney

2: Hi! I'm Olivia and I'm a gymnast!

3: I have a younger sister, Amanda, who is also a gymnast.

4: I've been taking gymnastics since I was 4 years old.

5: I take gymnastics at a gym called Gymnastics Etc.

6: Gymnastics Etc. is located in Lakeland, Florida, where I live!

7: My team at Gymnastics Etc. and I work hard to prepare for our competitions.

8: My coaches are Michi, Jen, and Phil. They help me learn new skills and perfect my routines | Michi | Jen | Phil

9: Someday, I hope to go to the Olympics, like my favorite gymnast, Shawn Johnson.

10: Today, I would like to teach you about gymnastics!

11: The first thing to remember about gymnastics is to dress properly.

12: Gymnasts can either wear a leotard, like Amanda's, or a t-shirt and shorts.

13: After you have the correct attire, the next step to take before beginning any type of exercise is stretching.

14: I'm going to teach you a few stretching positions.

15: The first position is called a pike. In a pike, it's important to keep your legs straight and together. When stretching in a pike, reach as far as you can and touch your toes.

16: The next stretching position is called a straddle. To make a straddle, spread your legs out as far as possible. To stretch in a straddle, reach down to each foot and in the middle.

17: The last stretch is a bridge. Start by lying on your back, then pushing up on your hands and feet to arch your back. Good job! You did it!

18: After stretching, it's time to start gymnastics!!!

19: There are four different events in girls' gymnastics. These events are floor, bars, beam, and vault.

20: Each event requires a lot of strength and flexibility. As a gymnast, it's important to have strong muscles and body control.

21: I'm going to show you the basic skills for each event.

22: On the floor, there are three basic skills; a forward roll, cartwheel, and handstand.

23: On the bars, it is important to learn how to do a front support and a cast.

24: In a front support, hold your body over the bar with straight arms and straight legs.

25: In a cast, push your hips away from the bar with straight arms and straight legs.

26: On the beam, there are different walks... | releve... coupe... and passe.

27: On vault, the main skill to learn is a straight jump.

28: After you have learned all these skills, you have learned the basics of girls' gymnastics!
