Our South America Vacation! - Page Text Content

FC: CHILE - ARGENTINA | December 2012

1: Our South America journey began with a 12-hour layover in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and a cozy night's sleep in bunk beds at the Slaviero Fast Sleep Hotel situated conveniently in the airport. Aside from Phillip's strenuous climb to the top bunk we were able to grab some sleep and arrive in Santiago refreshed to meet up with Adriaan and Illaria for the start of our journey in Chile, South America.

3: San Cristobal Situated in the largest park in Santiago, Parque Metropolitano, the hill of San Cristobal provides panoramic views of the city from 300 meters high and is home to the colossal statue of the Virgin Mary, which was a gift from the French government.

8: After having lunch at a great seafood restaurant and our trip to the Virgin Mary we went on a self-guided walking tour in central Santiago and saw many of the historic sights and parks of the city. We took an ice cream break and Phillip got a chance to practice his Spanish, but unfortunately his quest to order a bottle of water was mistaken for wanting more ice cream and Ilaria had to come to his rescue!

13: - Hotel Loreto

16: - Valparaiso

19: The Bohemian and slightly anarchic atmosphere of the cerros reflects the urban chaos of the city. Brightly painted houses pile on top of each of each other and half forgotten passageways head up and down the hills, offering fantastic views of the Pacific. Valparaiso is all about contradictions.

22: Don't think: Look! - Ludwig Wittgenstein

25: Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air. -Ralph Waldo Emerson

28: Perhaps not to be is to be without your being, without your going, that cuts noon light like a blue flower, without your passing later through fog and stones, without the torch you lift in your hand that others may not see as golden, that perhaps no one believed blossomed the glowing origin of the rose, without, in the end, your being, your coming suddenly, inspiringly, to know my life, blaze of the rose-tree, wheat of the breeze: and it follows that I am, because you are: it follows from ‘you are’, that I am, and we: and, because of love, you will, I will, We will, come to be. - Pablo Neruda

30: The Moai of Easter Island

36: - Vina Casas del Bosque

39: Enjoying a delectable lunch with wine pairings at the vineyards restaurant Tanino.

44: One touch of nature makes the whole world kin. -William Shakespeare

47: - Vina Errazuriz in the Valle de Aconcagua

53: Wine is a constant proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. -Benjamin Franklin

61: Pedro wined, dined and entertained us for the entire afternoon at Vina Errazuriz. Corks were popped on the best bottles found in Chile. It was a fantastic day!

64: After a short flight over the Andes, we received a warm welcome at the Posada Cavieres Wine Farm in Mendoza, Argentina. Hans grilled up a delicious beef BBQ for dinner upon our arrival and Alina was a gracious hostess for our stay.

67: Vina Achaval-Ferrer

69: Bodega Caelum Caelum is a small constellation that can be observed from the southern hemisphere. It represents a chisel, the sculptor's tool. As the chisel to a sculptor, our hands are to us the tool of winemaking.
