28: Born on July 11th, 1923, in El Paso, Texas, Carmen at an early age had desires of becoming an artist. In the 2nd grade she had a classmate by the name of Socorro Garcia who was a talented drawer. She would watch him draw and try to copy him. However, she preferred to draw landscapes and railroad tracks to his parts of faces. At home she would watch her father draw horses and try to copy him. He would get mad at her for drawing on the oilcloth. She was suppose to learn girl chores and not have silly dreams of drawing. Carmen would wait till he left and copy the pictures. Throughout her life she had the urge to draw, sculpt, and paint. Then after she retired she became serious about learning to paint. Her first teacher was Sadako. She was very tough and demanded perfection. After two months Carmen was allowed to paint a palm tree on the beach. After that she continued to expand her horizons for the next 5 years. Carmen's next teacher was Minnie. She encouraged Carmen and introduced her to her 1st workshop. It was a class on making clouds. That was 20 years ago. Carmen now prefers painting portraits especially those of the saints and Christ.
29: This is only a small portion of the many paintings that Carmen has painted over the years. She is now 88 years and still has many more canvases to fill.
